I am not criticizing Keltner or his fellow patriots. However by now, ALL persons attending rallies to support the police or President Trump need to practice elevated situational awareness at these rallies when the violent protesters show up. Every effort must be made to protect people who are at the rally from the beginning to the end. DO NOT let bullies isolate anyone. As soon as Kelly started his crap, a common alert word should have been shouted to summon other people to surround him. Something like RED FLAG, RED FLAG, RED FLAG yelled repeatedly to get attention should be used. Don't talk to a guy like that and avoid responding to his challenges to fight. Surround him and let HIM talk his way out. And of course, if an agitator is surrounded, there still need to be eyes watching for someone coming up behind the people surrounding the agitator. Situational awareness, a common and recognizable alert when trouble starts, and more situational awareness until everyone leaves safely.

I agree with the situational awareness, but disagree with your conclusion. Both events were over and everybody was heading back to their cars. The police supporters should have just kept moving and shouldn't have stopped to interact with the agitators. Just ignore them and move on in groups if possible.
