I'm guessing that the officer pulled the trigger because the person he just attempted to tase opened the vehicle's door and tried to get inside, reach inside. I can see that in the officer's mind, this was a life threatening situation. I can also advocate that the officer be arrested and tried before his peers for making such an assessment in the absence of any apparent life threatening situation which is typically required for a justified shooting.

To me, this stinks of suicide by cop, because ANY sane person knows reaching into any object that hasn't been cleared of having weapons when an officer has a weapon pointed at you will almost always result in the officer pulling the trigger.

Worst that could happen is that the suspect gets out a gun and shoots the officers. The most likely scenario is that the suspect drives away. That could be seen as wielding a deadly weapon, but honestly, it could also be seen as the suspect wanting to diffuse the situation.

Me, the officer would have to have a very compelling story as to why that was a justified shooting or they'd better hope I wasn't anywhere near their jury pool.

I agree that Shaver was acting very differently than this guy was. My point here was that both men were under stress, and therefore could not be reasonably expected to perfectly obey every police command.

For me anyway, I think it will all boil down to whether or not the police saw a gun before shooting the black guy. I know cops have a dangerous job. But I cannot accept that it’s okay to shoot someone because he * might * be going for a gun.

Anyway, thank you for your polite and reasoned response. That doesn’t always occur here when the topic is controversial!

You'd think that on this site you'd at least see a level of common civility before insults are hurled - it's how I see us as different from leftists....I hear you.

“Who the F stomps away from the cops like that? And then climbs into a car and starts digging for something?”

Someone whose mind is not clear due to adrenaline and emotions. He could’ve been trying to leave and his mind didn’t even register the police. Tunnel vision/hearing.

Average citizens rarely get into fights and don’t train for emotional situations so they may not always react as police want or would expect. They may be in the midst of a full blown panic attack and have no control of themselves. Every person is different when under extreme stress.

Police on the other hand are selected, trained and evaluated precisely for their cool in such a situation. Or at least they used to be.

Police should do absolutely everything in their power to avoid lethal force. They have no clue if a person resisting is having a panic attack, diabetic, etc.

Yeah. I know. If it was one of mine, there would be a stack of bodies before I went to the grave.

Honesty is the best policy - cops lost me years ago with the no knock raids, revenue policies, general thug behavior....

When they pull over a 50+ year old guy, obviously heading to work (engineer) an approach the car with their hand on their gun - they lost their chance of support. My 70+ mother even doesn’t like the popo. She has never done anything even close to bad. Poor woman never had any fun either. But she gets nervous when cops get close. How screwed up is that when you lose the 75 year old full time White House wife, suburban, religious, straight lace, .... people. It’s whack. Is it the cops or the politicians or both. I say 75/25 cops/politicians.

“orders once they believed they were in danger.”

I hope you are not that naive.

” ignored all orders”

Tell everyone just what those orders were, and how you come to have that information...........

Oh please stop with the immediate insults - unless I agree with you I’m ‘incredibly naive’ - whatever. Why the lack of audio? Cops don’t draw weapons without giving orders - once they’re being ignored and the subject tries to reach in to a vehicle you’ve little choice - they put you in that situation and milliseconds count.

Unless you’re so naive as to think they don’t...

Do NOT add in words to what I wrote like “incredibly”.

Getting a bit desperate in your badge-licking act that you resort to lying about what someone posted?

They did and they got away with it. They murdered that guy the other night too. Then lied about it. The girl could consider herself lucky they did not kill her.

You are absolutely correct. We simply can’t tolerate a bunch of nervous, paranoid, armed, trigger happy society misfits who interpret every person and movement by someone as a threat. They must be weeded out.

It looks bad, but if I had cops pointing guns at me the LAST thing I would be doing is reaching into a car...

Police used to have batons, but after the Rodney King beating which started the LA riots, police departments started phasing them out.

I guess they figured that if you’re going to have a riot anyway, might as well shoot him.
