Technical Questions about Painting Long Blue Lines
Fightin Kentuckian

Posted on 07/17/2020 12:17:28 PM PDT by fightin kentuckian

My "friend" needs to be able to continuously paint a continuous line, on pavement. This line will be about 8 inches wide and about three hundred feet long. Neatness is NOT a factor. Time is the most important criteria.

A couple of questions? About how much blue paint will this require?

Does anyone know of or have suggestions on how to paint this line quickly, in less than 10 minutes?

Could the paint be practically applied from the bed of a truck?

Do inexpensive, easy to use, "line painting" machines exist?

Could two or three teams of two people with rollers do it in 10 min or less?

Any suggestions or areas that I haven't thought of?

My friend has some tentative plans and ideas that she is fleshing out but she want's to tap the great collective brain trust known as Freepers and see what else is possible.

Thank you.

And, I would, of course, use cash for everything I bought while being very, very, safe and wearing my full face mask. Afterward,....long afterward,....after a year or so in storage, the tools would go on craigslist.

Get a gallon of blue paint. Punch a bunch of holes in the bottom. Flip can over and quickly pop off lid. Walk along the street while holding the can by the handle and let paint fall on road. Have a buddy with a roller on a pole come behind you and spread the paint out.

Lol.. just line those paint filled water balloons up to make a blue line of individual splats...

Redneck striper... 5 gallon bucket with removable stopper in hole drilled down low or on the bottom... strap bucket to the tailgate so it’s suspended past the bumper. Test with sand to see the rate of flow. When filled with paint and ready to go and in position at a stop sign, pull the plug and let it flow as you drive.

I know there’s a way because a busted can of intense pink panther colored paint put a quarter mile stripe on a road down here that lasted for years, and that was an accident.

Not permanent but you can get bright blue chalk for refilling carpenter’s chalk string lines... comes in bottles with spouts.

Might even be blue powdered concrete pigment though usually it is in grays, tans and reds. Cut the corner on a bag and deliver the stripe on a bike.

Hmmm... wonder if some lawn chair webbing would make an oversized chalk line?

Is this something you could set up to dispense from a child trailer attached behind a bicycle rather than possibly breaking the law by having a person riding in the back of a pickup truck? Then again I presume its for your own parking lot so it may not be a problem.

Look to your local city maintenance depart. They paint long line at road edges and the center strip lane dividers. Small machine can be handled by one person. Should not be too expensive even though it is city governments. Hardware store should carry them or something similar

Seems to me, that question is all about square footage. One coat of paint at 8 inches for 100 feet = 8/12*100 or 67 square feet. On average, one gallon covers about 400 square feet. So you could get away with a quart if doing one coat. I'd be safe and spring for the gallon as one quart probably isn't 1/4 the cost of a gallon anyway.

Also 8 inches by 300 feet is equal to 200 square feet On a porous surface you may want to double to 400 square feet of coverage

" I'd be safe and spring for the gallon as one quart probably isn't 1/4 the cost of a gallon anyway."

I'd get at least a gallon. I'm guessing you're not going to be carefully controlling the coating thickness and more is probably better within reason. And you're probably not going to have the option of going back for a second coat.

Be a shame to run out halfway through the job.

IMHO a 5 gallon bucket of blue paint, hanging from a truck tailgate to just a few inches above the pavement would work great. Especially if done at night so driving slow & straight would be possible. One hole in the top, one hole in the bottom, drilled by a friend just before told “good to go”.

The paint would spread a bit after landing.

What you really need is a diversionary crowd of a couple hundred or more. They could all wear BLM sweatshirts (ambiguous). They won’t arrest a whole crowd.
