Thinking of going back to work at 65.

Posted on 04/24/2019 10:12:30 AM PDT by Catmom

Any thoughts? Personal experiences? Advice?

BTW, it's voluntary, pretty much not necessary financially. I've been getting an income stream from my investments and just signed up for Medicare.

Thanks.

Bless you for helping.

Our church is growing like topsy but we never seem to have enough volunteers.

If you’ve noticed the days of the Gray Greeter are over. Much younger folks now. The theory is if someone needs help they are better able to give it.

Dimensia is a bitch.

I sub at the school I retired from. I enjoy it. Maybe get called once or twice a week. I tell people I flunked retirement. Don’t need the money and I don’t have to accept the call if I’ve got something else going on.

My last job was INFESTED with libs and moonbats so I have plenty of “on the job experience” with this type.

If you keep your mouth shut and ignore them, most of them will leave you alone though they won’t like you very much. They can still read that you’re “different” and some get really touchy about that.

“Saw too many people hanging on way too long”

Yep, I see that also. I suspect for some work IS their life. Kinda sad IMO. Not me.

Better to flunk retirement than to flunk work.

I had too many coworkers like the latter.

AND THEY WERE STILL EMPLOYED!

I’ll tell you to make sure you have enough withholding from whatever wages you do take so that you avoid any unwanted surprises at tax time.

That's good advice. I started taking Social Security at 66 but didn't actually quit working until 69. The taxes during that stretch were eating me up as I was still making full salary with the SS added to it.

Go volunteer or do PRN. That’ll keep you busy enough

Learn to fly fish. Go walking. Learn to paint or photograph

I go visit small towns. I walk the cemeteries learn the history eat at the local diner

You haven’t discovered the reality yet. If you are 65 you MUST go onto Medicare. Your company will kick you off the current insurance as soon as the paper work catches up

Work the early hours at a bakery/donut shop. Sometimes they have to have someone up and working at 6 AM. A lot of oldsters are up at that hour anyway, and don’t mind working until the 10 AM shift comes in.

Am still working at 70 and just turned in my notice. I gave them until October, but they countered with December. I will stay but by then I’ll be 71 and really looking forward to an afternoon nap now and then.

"I’m afraid the cantankerous part is in my dna. I haven’t lived in Jersey since 1984 so the “geographical cure” didn’t work!" Good on you...stay cool! I spent formative years on south side of Chicago but left in 1954. Still very much in my DNA....especially my use of "colorful" language!😎

Catmom, I am assuming you are a retired RN wanting to go back to work part time at an ICE facility!!! PLEASE be careful at our age our immune systems are not in any way as strong as when we were young!!! You know this as a retired RN the people crossing our borders are coming with MANY illnesses and you could very well end up very sick, very often with the illness lingering longer due to immune system having harder time fighting it off due to your age!!! Before you jump into this job consider this, I am just one of those people who HATE being sick, and would do most ANYTHING to avoid it!!! God Bless and may he help you in your decision!!!

There’s a six month “window” around your 65th birthday where if you don’t sign up for Medicare, you’ll be assessed a 10% penalty for the rest of your life.

Only found out about that through my own research.

Man, getting older is like having another job.

You don’t need to sign up and there is no penalty if you maintain coverage at work.

Thank you for your concern.

I will ask Mother Mary to intercede for me that I make a wise decision.
