Illinois has coal mines?

Iowa used to have them. I lived for a few years in Centerville, the site of mining.

Lots of coal mines in the Illinois/Indiana/Kentucky Tri-State area. It’s known as the Western Coal Field and is more productive than the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field.

Back in the 70’s pretty much everybody I knew either worked in a mine or was married to someone who worked in a mine. It was a very prosperous time here.

Now, not so much.
