Having a laser and flashlight on your pistol may be the thing to have and it does look highly cool.
Black Scout Survival is a collaboration of all things tactical and survival, goes over the practicality of mounting a laser or combined laser-flashlight on your pistol for home defense. So basically what it comes down to is for EDC (Every Day Carry) is not a practical thing, for a home defense it may be an invaluable tool to have.
Before spending time getting a laser, be sure to work on your basic marksman shooting with iron sights. Slapping a laser on it, looks nice but will not make you a better shooter. The advantage with a laser is that it can get you on target quickly.
Having a tactical flashlight is an added convenience so you don't have to use the "Chapman" method. Placing your finger on the mechanism is all it takes while holding your pistol on target. Lasers has a huge advantage of acquiring targets quickly. Flashlight can help you identify who is in front of you and prevent tragedies before making that choice to use deadly force. Do you all have flashlight and laser mounted on your pistol? See the footage here.
No.
But the visual “scare factor” does help focus the shooter’s attention, AND the attacker’s attention on his , er, “midsection” of interest.
Toss in a pair of aviator shades and a black jacket, and I would say it’s a requirement.
My view:
Laser, yes. It allows you to aim without tying up your eyesight on iron sights, thereby losing the ability to see what else is in front of you, e.g., other bad guys.
Light, not sure.

I keep a flashlight next to me at night. If it should happen I’ll have both going. 1600 lumens should give me an advantage. I’m not stupid, want to see who I’m shooting.

Added effect is that, in the dark, the bright light “freezes” an intruder’s sight, making it difficult to engage the victim.

EDC pistol, no.
Nightstand pistol, gunlight rail-mounted.
A laser pointer is unnecessary, IMO, since I have trained to shoot at night with flashlights and I know the sights stand out very well against a lit target.
I am not sold on lasers but I am sold on a good tac light and night sights for in the dark shooting.
If you have even shot in the dark with out them you well understand.
If you have never shot in the dark one should really find a place to do so it is a eye opening experience.
Do you really need a Laser/Flashlight on Pistols for Home Defense?
Yes, most definitely yes!
In 2008 a lady threatened my life and proved she could whack me by illegally entering our home when we where away, 3 times. We were both quite scared.
So I got a laser/light for my XD40. And practiced over and over retrieving it in dark and aiming. What I learned is the light is very blinding to the attacker, the red dot was bright enough to show very well on the target. After several practice sessions I was very confident I could splatter this bitch all over the bedroom walls.
Without the lights the attacker would not have been blinded and the shot would have to be taken in the dark based on sound, which means no positive target identification.
I tried turning on the nite stand lamp instead of using the XD40’s light & fumbled a couple times knocking the lamp over.
BTW, that light setup is useless in daylight.
What?! No mention of the “shoot me first” jacket (AKA Photojournalist vest) ?!?!
If the light blinds the attacker or helps you see without destroying your own night vision (assuming a dark room or dark outside scene), then it might help.
But the red dot on an attacker’s chest? Definitely puts HIS attention on HIMSELF as the target, and gets the rest of the attackers’ attention as well.
Now, in a combat situation, the rest of the attacking squad now KNOW you are not aiming at them, and DO attack with more certainty at the gun owner as a known target in a known location. But that’s combat, not a urban street attack or home invasion by thugs.
I don’t use a laser on my 12 gauge pump....just sayin’.
A custom '50 Merc completes the package...
“BTW, that light setup is useless in daylight.”
So’s a red laser. A green laser works well, day or night.
I use little plug in lights that are motion detected that throw enough light to shoot by for 30’. The downside is that the light goes off when you have to get up to use the bathroom. The upside is you don’t have to fumble for a liflashlight when your half asleep.
Not necessary but it is a combat multiplier.
I was being chased by a bunch of Obama’s people once. Actually, I was in my car and they were on foot, so the danger to me was minimal. I could see the police on the way with a significant response.
Suddenly, every one of the subjects had little red dots on their chests. It’s amazing how quickly they hit the ground.
(before all y’all self righteous guys come on and tell me I need to carry, I live in a place that places severe restrictions on such rights and kind of need my job)
Home security is often needed after getting woken up from a sleep, so yes, laser is very useful. Also for those of us that wear glasses, we may not have time to put on the glasses before needing to aim the weapon.
