Some other interesting facts about Luzerne County:
- Site of the July 3, 1778 Battle of Wyoming, a one-sided affair in which British regulars, Tories and their Iroquois Allies killed over 340 regulars, local militia and settlers, many after they surrendered.
- GOP has only 3 of 13 city council seats in Wilkes-Barre, the county seat. It has two of six state house districts and two of four state senate districts.
- County is near evenly split between two U.S. House districts, that of the 11th of Lou Barletta (RHazleton) and 17th of Matthew Cartwright (DMoosic).
- Luzerne County is the only county in the United States with a plurality of citizens reporting Polish (22%) as their primary ancestry.
- Registered Democrats (Pennsylvania is a closed primary state) outnumber registered Republicans by 59% to 32%.
- Obama carried the country 51.5% to 46.7% in 2012 and 53.3% to 45% in 2008, almost a mirror of the Commonwealth margins of 52% to 46.6% in 2012 and 52.7% to 45.6% in 2008.

The territory of Wyoming (now the state of Wyoming) was named after the Wyoming massacre. The congressman who first proposed the name was a Pennsylvania native. There were several other names proposed but that one won out.
