It was inevitable.
Rookie Michael Sam, heralded as the first openly gay player in the National Football League, was released Saturday by the St. Louis Rams, prompting the liberal blog Mother Jones to run what amounted to a photo of the player, along with a provocative, almost juvenile headline.
The post, Michael Sam, Who Is Better At Football Than You Will Ever Be At Anything, Has Been Cut By the Rams, offered no perspective whatsoever. In fact, other than the headline, there were no words.
When Sam was first drafted, it was clear that if he were to eventually be cut, St. Louis would face unfair scrutiny, never mind that the annals of pro football are full of college all stars who failed to catch on in the NFL.
Or that the odds were against Sam from the beginning gay or not.
It turns out that St. Louis was already deep at the position Sam plays, with two of the best defensive lineman in the NFL already on the squad, and Sam was outplayed by a fellow rookie, an undrafted free agent out of West Texas A&M who led the team in solo tackles in the preseason, according to Fox Sports....

Easily predicted.... And fulfilled...
Just like B-HO.
When I said “Pros,” I meant the NFL. The point was that there are several Heisman trophy winners who never made it in the NFL. There are a lot of 1st team All Americans who never made it. Sam was All SEc. Wow. that does not guarantee you a spot on an NFL team.
Not several, 3. And two of those it was their decision. The guy in the 1950s decided to serve his country, so teams didn't draft him. Likewise Charlie Ward decided to go to basketball, or he probably would have been drafted. With Jason White, I'm not sure how much it was that he couldn't cut it or his knees were bad.
But you have to remember, those awards including the Heisman aren't given to people based on how they will do in the pros. Some players don't have the size, or speed, etc. to compete at that level, but can still play great in college.
A 7th Rounder only has a 14% chance of making an NFL Roster.
The Rams cut him, he has cleared waivers, meaning that no other NFL team signed him.
Right now, he is a Free Agent with no team that wants/needs him although that could change as the season progresses if a team that is thin at DE has some injuries and signs Sam out of desperation.
When Sam was drafted and Undrafted Free Agent DT/DE Michael Westbrooks was signed by the Rams, I knew Westbrooks had a better chance at making the roster than Sam as Westbrooks can play both DT and DE
Sam is a slow, undersized DE and he was named co-SEC player of the year because he had so much talent around him that he was often single-covered and made plays.
But as everyone knows, success in College doesn’t always translate to success in the pros.
How many Heisman winners were drafted high in the 1st round and busted?
Running a pedestrian 4.91 at the Combine pretty much sealed his fate. That’s Offensive Linemen speed.
Compare that to Rams DE Robert Quinn, who ran a 4.5 40 yard dash at the combine a few years ago.
6’5”, 335 lb. OL Greg Robinson ran a 4.92 at the Combine.
Same is 6’2”, 265 and ran a 4.91 at the Combine.
He was lucky to be drafted.
The Rams have the best and the deepest DL in the NFL - Sam couldn’t have been drafted by a worst team as the Rams are loaded at DL
And lots of Heisman winners are busts as pros - Pat Sullivan and Johnny Rodgers come to mind, as well as Matt Leinart and, one could argue, Reggie Bush. It’s a different game in the NFL. Everyone was a college all-star.
You just KNOW he wanted to write that in this story.

Or the Navahomos.
Alas. Reality bites a mediocre player celebrated for his homosexuality.
In related news, Lonnie Ballentine, the 256th pick and 2014's Mr Irrelevant, has been kept by the Houston Texans although currently on injured reserve.
I don’t remember Mother Jones weeping for Tim Tebow.
Ben is the homosexual son of Richard Dreyfuss.
This is the only football I watch:

The NFL sucks
Its not like the guy was up for the Heisman trophy. There are a lot of free agents out there that are super talented waiting for a chance. People get cut off those squads every day of the week.
In fact, I’d say that for every projected starter on the Cowboys defense, there is a recently cut player that would be an upgrade.
If things don’t got the libs’ way, it’s gotta be hate, bias, and bad politics. Fact is, this was a business decision.
The picture of sKerry with a football and standing next to a surfboard while wearing a wetsuit were too funny. It’s obvious this lightweight candya$$ hadn’t been near any of those things in about 40 years.
Well, that sure was a case of celebrating too early. Michael Sam should have waited until the tryouts and results were back, and he was actually in the league, before he “came out”.
There were about 900 players, who were all better at football than I will ever be at anything else, cut at the same time. What's the excuse for them?
