Government is a force. A dangerous servant ... becoming a fearful master. Here, Federal government, a force powered by dubiously "elected" folks (a minority that cheated), overrules the people of their respective states in deciding police can take citizens' guns under such pretenses regardless of what people on the ground there want or would have voted for.
I think Americans know this instinctively and want to vote FOR politicians whose destination is to reduce government on all fronts. The 2nd Amendment is an issue crucial to many Democrats and Republicans, a key uniting focus for the very principle of holding down government.
