It’s worth mentioning that George Orwell fought on the opposite side from Franco with an anti-Soviet Marxist group, and was almost killed by the local Soviet-backed Communists, his “allies,” in a purge. He barely escaped Spain with his life.
His book of his time fighting in the Spanish Civil War, Homage to Catalonia, is a worthwhile read. At some level it is the story of a liberal getting mugged (not that he ever truly became a conservative), and in it you can see some of the roots of 1984 and Animal Farm.

But you can’t ignore inflation. Both Japan and Spain were coming out of their dark ages, but Spain climbed back in.

Try the GDP per capita, constant dollars for USA, Japan and Spain. That tells the real story.
No, but I think Franco was good for Spain, but they are different than America, so what works here doesn’t necessarily work there, and vice versa.

I agree with you. Communism would have destroyed Spain and harmed the West. My concern are those who wistfully wish for a military junta or rightwing dictatorship here in America. America can right herself via the people.
My father worships the ground Franco walked on. Franco was a fascist thug and it was only after he was long gone that it was safe to say you opposed him.
