BTW..The men do have the upper hand, far moreso in Muslim countries, but in the matter of Katherine and her husband and the parents...who were all here for ten years or so....the dynamics would be quite different than a Muslim man and woman in A Muslim country.
Western influence on Muslim Woman is powerful....they have far more freedoms here than they ever could in a Muslim country.
Understanding Muslims is like trying to untangle a plate of spagetti...THEY often don’t understand why they do the things they do or believe them...which is why having dialogue with them is difficult...the more educated they are the better....here in our country.
But even with that...the ISlamic indoctrination from childhood can surface and be ,if you will activated, just as with Katherins husband.
