Some people say you can’t prepare for every situation. I say, you can because every situation has one common element that can and will hurt you outside of the event itself: other people. Lets face it, if you die in a storm, a nuclear/biological/chemical event, or terror attack, then you are dead. There is nothing from stopping God’s will.
You don’t prepare for those events, you prepare for surviving those events. There are many events, (and not far-fetched crazy extreme events) which people should be prepared to deal with to protect themselves and their families when it’s over and you are alive.

I’ve been cutting up strips of sod from my yard all spring to enlarge one of my garden spaces. It sure beats mowing that heavy grass over the drainfield.

If nothing else the whole worlds economy is a house of cards just waiting for the right zephyr to send it tumbling.
If the present spending continues I don’t see how we can avoid a collapse like that of Argentina ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yerKMQc7-w&feature=grec_index )but on a global scale.
But the market is up you say, yeah it’s up using billions in ‘printed’ money in the hands of corrupted bankers, investors and their cronies. The world is now flooded with fake and faux money. The game is so rigged and now even the ‘house’ is starting to lose.
When the whole thing tanks as it will what do you think the entiled class will do when they can’t get their cell phones, their food stamps and EBT cards, rent vouchers and so forth.
What we will see is a much more violent version of Argentina, we will certainly see something much closer to Bosnia. American has become Balkanized and splintered, we no longer share the same basic beliefs we have become pocks of people with little in common with one another.
And many of this pockets are very larger entitlement minded and believe they are owed much by others and already shown that they will use violence to get their due.
I see many many small business wiped out by flash mob looting, and see rape, robbery and murder for murder sake. You will see what I call ‘pocket pogroms’ where ‘yutes’ will think no more about killing those unlike them than most people think about stepping on a roach. That will be the test of many. Most preppers I know are Christian people and they will hesitate to do what they might have to do to stop the ‘yutes’. On the other hand the ‘yutes’ won’t think twice nor lose a minute of sleep, in fact they will smile and laugh about it.

For those of you who haven’t started already it’s time to prepare almost past time maybe. You needed to be stocking up on food guns, ammo, basic household supplies like soap, papergoods, cleaning supplies, good sturdy clothes including extra socks, underwear and extra shoes and boots, a extra couple changes of oil and filters for your car, tools, things you buy everyday start buying two and put one up.
As the LDS say “When the emergency is upon us the time for preparedness has past.”

So you’re willing to use one weapon to defend your life but not another, more efficient one. Interesting.

Salmon comes in foil packages that are easy to store for a long time, as well as flour, sugar, yeast, salt, pepper, spices and flavorings. Canned goods, etc. Milk in the cubes. Water comes this way, too, a good way to stash an emergency supply.
I don't have any suitable land for gardening, but plant occasional crops like carrots, radishes, lettuce, etc. in large containers.
Knowing several low-tech skills is a big plus. Soapmaking, spinning/knitting/sewing by hand, pickling and brining, etc.
Anybody can do this much. Do it a little at a time, and before you know it, you'll have a nice supply of goods for keeping or bartering. Oh, yes. Make sure to get plenty of Baker's Chocolate and cocoa powder.

Under the name of National Security, the media has to be ‘temporarily’ replaced with all information coming from directly from the White House. All the former complying media sources will be pressed into total silence. All the former instigators and leaders of the black communities will be never heard from again...they disappear.

On Doomsday Preppers I saw the one lady preserving eggs by coating them in some kind of cooking oil. Does this work?
I cringe watching that show. The same lady was training other women on self defense but was obviously very out of shape. She was also giving firearm classes where they were shooting at small targets laid on the ground.
As for the firearms and personal defense, about all I can say is if you have a gun, be prepared to use it and don't be afraid of it. If you don't think you could aim it at another person, you'd better get into shape, because you almost certainly will have a fight on your hands. Better to have a reliable handgun with a laser sight ("point and shoot") than get shot, choked, stabbed, etc from close-contact struggle.
Coating eggs in oil might help some but I wouldn’t want to save them for long. The oil would fill the pores in the shell.
Coating eggs in vegetable oil is one method they use to control swan population levels around here. It causes the embryo to suffocate.
Oh I agree on the use and feeding of firearms. I just think the show is a joke exploiting people to make them look bad.
Its amazing how many preppers ignore one of the most important items, that of being in shape.
I think that was her purpose of using oil, prevent oxygen absorption and thereby the spoilage. However it seems like the oil would turn rancid. As the other poster noted, storing fragile eggs seems risky.
Getting through the first 2 to 3 months could make *all* the difference. It also buys you time to physically adapt a bit to the new reality.
Doing this would allow you to have eggs during the winter months when chickens naturally do not lay many or any eggs. The reason eggs and Easter go together is because that was usually when the hens began laying again. It was customary for the peasants to bring their lord an Easter tithe and it was usually eggs.
You can expand the hens laying time with a warm coop and supplemental food but without the additional light from a bulb they will stop laying during the winter.
From what I’ve seen of the preppers show hasn’t impressed me much. Most of us can’t afford to put in a 1000+ square foot bunker.
I feel a lot more secure with a good support network of friends and neighbors I can trust.
