Filing a death certificate doesn’t inform SS. That has to be done separately.

Who does that?

The family ( or legal guardian ). In my case ( this was the 90’s ) you had to call an 800 number. They sent you the forms that you had to fill out and send it back with a copy of the death certificate. Then whatever bank acoount that was receiving the SS checks ( electronic deposit ), the deposits were stopped to that account. That is why you see in the news alot of times of people collecting their dead spouses SS checks years after they died. Obviously there was a death cert ( unless the buried them in the back yard ). They just didn’t notify SS of the death as they are required to by law- thus the checks continued flowing.

In the vast majority of cases in this country, things like notifying SS are handled by the funeral home. It’s just a part of the service.
