Almost every homeless person or addict has a similar story.

They were told this could happen to them if they got into their habits and almost everyone of them laughed at the possibility, because it couldn’t happen to the.

John, your post has ominous overtones to it. I know you are new to Free Republic, but trust me, I’ve been around here longer than my account has (8 years) and I can attest to the fact that people here do sincerely care about the welfare of others. That might be why I hang around in the first place. By posting here you have reached out to us. We are here. How can we help?

I’ve been sober for almost 15 years now. You CAN make amends and live a happy life....clean and sober. Good luck to you.

It sounds like you screwed over everyone who trusted you... not much of a recommendation for having young people listen to you.

My concern and pity are for your victims - companies that trusted you, women who loved you, a child without a father or support... Time will tell if this is real or one more con - I like other, wish you well ...

We all have different bottoms. Let’s hope you have found yours. Not because I am glad you feel bad, but so it can now get better.

Of course, if you think a drink will make it better, you can always try and let us know how it works out . . .

John, Don’t give up. I know that is easier said then done. I had 15 years sober, 11 years married and a great job living in a nice home. I drank and lost it all again! Now I have 8 years sober and a decent job. I found my soul mate and have begun a different life again. It may take time, but all is not lost-have faith and try to believe in you again.

Thank you for your honesty and your post. It’s not too late to turn your life around. Are you still alive? Well then it’s not over yet...8 months sober here. Starting a new career at 58 myself. I’ve paid a huge price for drinking too...that’s what it does - takes things away from us. But God - and sobriety - and AA, for me - restores some things and the rest I guess we just have to make our peace with. But don’t give up — you’re still here and sober - one day at a time!

Thank you for sharing your wisdom-gained-through-experience.
I know things can be tough but sit-down [read Job] and think about all the “good people” who have crap happen to them through no fault of their own.

“Justice” is very important to me, and while I wouldn’t like it if I were in your position I could take some comfort in the fact that the consequences *were* due to actions completely under my control — very little comfort, but still some. I’m not going to lie and say “things will get better,” because they might not. Neither do I have any control over saying what will or will not happen in anything regarding your life; but I can say that I hope things do “get better.” —I always believed things “get better” until I was deployed to Iraq; now I fear I think things simply cease to matter— I can’t say anything much about AA or other groups, as I simply haven’t experienced them, other than to say some people do find it helpful. Also, I can pray for you, if you’d like; though I certainly am not the “righteous man” whose “prayers availth much.” [James 5]

Please forgive the ‘unsympathetic’ tones that might come out, especially since my intention was more to comfort; ‘Empathy’ is not my particular strength (I imagine I’d be the one awkwardly patting someone on the back after they heard a loved-one died).
Thank you.

When you reach the point that God is all you have, you will see God is all you need. Your new life starts tonight. I’ll pray.

>Alcohol is the cause of much joy and much sorrow in the world.

I think I agree.
I’ve heard it described as an “amplifier” where if you’re feeling down or thinking about being a dumbass you’ll feel more down or do those dumbass things, but if you’re happy it’ll make you happier.

Bingo! Now who was it who said that God gave us beer because he wanted us to be happy and loves us? Was that Franklin?

OP- whether younger or older, your sharing your experience is an insight for everyone. Good luck to you and welcome!
