Super Cyclone Yasi Heads For Queensland With UPDATES
PA Pundits International ^ | 31 January 2011 | TonyfromOz

This is the latest UPDATE on this super Cyclone heading for Cairns, a city with a population of around 130,000. There is an image at the Post comparing some large and damaging storms, and this Cyclone Yasi bears remarkable similarities in nearly every respect with Hurricane Katrina, except Yasi will pack more than three times the rain (around 40 inches in this case with Yasi) that was associated with Katrina, and Yasi will have approximately the same storm surge, around 23 feet. This is a truly frightening thing, and you'll see just how frightening from the latest Satellite tracking imagery, also linked to. People are evacuating this city and also from surrounding towns as well, as more than 1,000 kilometres of the coastline is threatened by this huge system.

Floods, then a massive cyclone. What did they do to tick Mother Nature off? :)

Here in the mid-USofA we are getting hit with ice and snow. Some Oklahoma locations (Tulsa) already have a foot of snow. St. Louis, Missouri has 23-inches of snow. This may be one of the worse winter storms in modern history, if the weatherpeople are right.

Weren't the climate change mob talking about how Aus would just have to learn to accept drier conditions?

Good luck, Aussies - you're battlers and you'll pull through anything. I hope it's gentler than it looks anyway.

I’ve been listening to ABC Queensland online and this sucker’s got them spooked for sure.

There are some models saying it could be Cat 5 by the time it makes landfall.

And you’ll never hear any NO style whining, b*tching and moaning from the Aussies.

Too bad they’re getting so battered. I could think of a couple of other countries I would wish this on. Not Australia.

I’m listening to ABC Queensland over the Internet. They just fired off the ‘Standard Emergency Warning Signal’, their equivalent of the EAS/EBS tones. Yasi has been upgraded to a Cat 5 and is expected to make landfall at 10pm Eastern Australian Time (7am Eastern-US/4am Pacific-US).
