Lockerbie Bomber Investigation - Did BP Secure al-Megrahi's Release?
Maggie's Notebook ^ | July 8, 2009 | Maggie M. Thornton

This week the "doctor" who was instrumental in securing the "compassionate" release of Abdelbaset Ali Mohamed al-Megrahi, under the guise of prostate cancer, now says the bomber may live another ten years. The states of New York and New Jersey want an investigation, saying new evidence has surfaced showing al-Megrahi was "not as sick as once believed." This amid speculation that BP had more than a little to do with al-Megrahi's release. Confirming the speculation is a Times OnLineUK report.

“Remember when the U.S. said little about al-Megrahi’s release, with Obama telling Scotland it was a mistake. He had to know Britain was behind the release. No one believed Scotland would be willing to make the decision, unless Brits were backing it. It was shocking to some of us that there would not be a sharp retort from the U.S.”

This person doesn’t understand UK politics and even worse, I suspect they don’t know what Scotland and Britain are.

Britain, Scotland unveil Lockerbie correspondence

In a separate letter, sent to Scottish government official George Burgess in July, the Foreign Office told him that Britain "did not give the U.S. an absolute commitment" to keep al-Megrahi jailed in Scotland.

FWIW, since I don't have any idea how accurate and/or complete the info is...

Timeline of Lockerbie correspondence

June 22 2009: The deputy director of the Scottish Government Criminal Justice Directorate, George Burgess, seeks advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) over whether the UK had given any commitments to the US Government or the United Nations prior to Megrahi's surrender for trial in 1999 which could stand in the way of his eventual release.

If Obama knew BP was involved in pressing for the release of al-Megrahi, then why is BP still allowed to operate in the United States? Aiding terrorism normally gets companies in trouble....

Here's some more about BP's role

Yesterday the group said it had never hidden its concern that delays in the decision to release Megrahi might stymie interests in Libya. A spokesman said: "In late 2007, BP told the UK government that we were concerned about the slow progress that was being made in concluding a Prisoner Transfer Agreement with Libya.

"We were aware that this could have a negative impact on UK commercial interests, including the ratification by the Libyan Government of BP's exploration agreement. The decision to release Megrahi in August 2009 was taken by the Scottish Government. It's not for BP to comment on the decision of the Scottish Government."

Nice. BP admitted they told the UK government that they needed a terrorist freed so they could make more money.

It's not surprising that Obama and the Democrats in Congress would allow BP to continue operating on American soil. BP is just the kind of company that Democrats would support.

The Obama administration knew and approved of this deal. Aided and abetted it by alling al-Megrahi's release.

We can't do a damn thing about the British gov't's role in this. But we can bloody well doing something about ours.

We also need to decide if we want BP doing business in the country. A company that was supporting the release of a terrorist so they can profit from it is not a company that should be doing business in the US.
