It’ll Cost You to Panic in Big D
Lone Star Times ^

Posted on 01/07/2009 7:05:28 AM PST by mnehring

Methinks the bureaucrats in the Dallas PD need some retraining in common sense:

Jill Frederick lives alone. She’s been burglarized twice. So when a stranger banged on her door at 11 p.m., she hit the panic button on her alarm.

Sounds reasonable to me. If my daughter lived alone, had been burglarized twice and someone starts beating down her door at 11 p.m., I’d want her to do the same thing. And it obviously worked, as the Dallas PD was there within six minutes and arrested a drunken dude. So, you ask, what is Jill Frederick’s complaint?

The panic button triggered what police call a “code 3 call.” Officers use their lights and sirens. They got there in six minutes. The man was still there and was drunk so they arrested him.

“To me, that’s what a panic button is for,” said Frederick.

But a few weeks later, Frederick got a $100 fine for a false alarm.

Fined for pushing a panic button under those circumstances? Yup, ’cause the dude didn’t make it in. And in Dallas, that apparently makes it a non-emergency.

Dallas police say there’s a city ordinance that allows them to fine people who use their panic buttons in non-emergency situations.

“We encourage people to use their panic alarm where there really is an emergency when there is an offense going down when someone is kicking in, coming in or trying to get into the house,” said Lt. Chris Aulbaugh from Dallas police.

Be sure and remember that, ladies that live alone and have been burglarized twice. Unless the dude gets through the door, don’t use your panic button - dial 911 and hope the police dispatcher thinks you are worthy enough ’cause if you push it, the Dallas PD revenue integrity enforcement division will be all over you.

$100 buys enough ammo for a few minutes use. Also it doesn’t take minutes, but seconds or less.

If everyone called the police for silly things like I’m scared to answer my door...this is not real police work. She should not have answered her door like any sensible person living alone would do. Then if the person was to gain entry into the home to burgalize, POWPOW goes the gun. THEN you call for police because you need police and most likely an ambulance.

She needs to fight it and tell the judge next time she’ll just put a deer slug through the door. The police can come and pick up the body at their leisure.

What a worthless Police department.

Come on Jill it was just some harmless drunk attempting to break-in to your place.

You should have know that...

You can't bother the police for such trivialities as a harmless drunk banging on your door in the middle of the night...

I mean really...

(Yes this is Sarcasm)

Actually, in this case, while she should have called the police, and the police shouldn’t have charged her the $100, it’s not really right that you kill a drunk just for pounding on your door. There are just far too many stupid drunks in the world, and the vast majority of the time they are harmless. Except perhaps to shrubbery.

And, come to think of it, the saying is true that “If it wasn’t for alcohol, the human race would have died out long ago.”

So, let common sense prevail. Don’t blow away an overly ambitious girl scout selling cookies, the cable guy you forgot you called a week ago, the pizza delivery guy looking for “Mr. I.P. Freeley”, or some drunk guy who thinks his old lady has locked him out, and is inside busting up all his bowling trophies.

Dallas County is a cesspool.

DISD is the worst school district in the country (beating Washington).

Harris County (Houston), Dallas County (Dallas), and Travis County (Austin) are pretty much the only non-Mexico-border counties that went for Obama, if that tells you something.

12 “Republicans” from the area just defected in the Texas house and joined with all the Dhims appointed a pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage, pro-Obama country club Republican from Alamo Heights as speaker of the house.

It’s amazing -— we have the majority in Texas, and yet the Dhims still control because the Republican ranks are filled with RINOs.

Six minutes seems like quite a while to me. She should fine them for taking so long! Speaking of revenue generation...

Priceless!
