GOP losing support with Hispanic voters-Party is paying a price for rhetoric on immigration

WASHINGTON — Lionel Sosa has been a proud Republican for years. He produced campaign commercials for the late Sen. John Tower, worked as a media consultant for Ronald Reagan and raised money for George W. Bush.

But the harsh immigration rhetoric of some Republicans has driven the Floresville executive to question the direction of his party.

"Anytime anybody says, 'We've got to get those people out of here, and we've got to build a wall to keep those Mexicans out,' it's going to come off as unfriendly, period," he said. "If (Republicans) don't pedal back on the rhetoric, they are going to be in big trouble."

The immigration debate is one reason why Sosa, 68, is supporting Democrat Bill Richardson, a Latino and New Mexico's governor, for president. More important, his sense of betrayal is echoed in Hispanic communities across America. Latino support for President Bush and the Republican Party has plummeted this year as the debate over illegal immigration has driven Hispanic voters away from the GOP.

The freshest illustration of the trend: a pair of presidential election forums on issues of importance to Hispanics sponsored by Univision. The Democratic forum in Miami tonight has drawn RSVPs from all eight Democratic contenders.

The Republican debate, scheduled for Sept. 16, has been postponed after organizers said only one candidate, Arizona Sen. John McCain, agreed to appear.

Just remember folks...

While standing against illigal immigration may be the right thing to do, it's likely to insure us a President Hillary if we don't stand up to Democrat VOTER FRAUD AND ILLEGAL VOTERS, now!

STOP VOTER FRAUD

All voters should be citizens!
Why would it be any other way?

So there are one issue voters who have voted Republican before.

Let them leave. If the only thing that makes them stop voting for Republicans is the desire to uphold the law and secure the borders (in an era of terror), then he never counted as a conservative in the first place.

He’s an idiot.

So what alternative do you suggest? Shut up and let anyone and every one over that border who feels the urge to cross?

How many dead Americans are you willing to sacrifice to keep these whiners happy?

Bush would have been better off not opening up the can of worms in the first place.

Lionel Sosa..."If (Republicans) don't pedal back on the rhetoric, they are going to be in big trouble."

The Republican Party isn't big enough for both Lionel Sosa and the Rule Of Law.

Take your pick, RNC.

Obviously this Sosa guy cares more for Hispanics than his country as a whole.

Which is the problem in the first place, balkanization and non-assimilation.

We should call them on it, go on offense.

This is about the seventh article I have seen with this theme. Which tells me that one or more of the Hispanic interest groups hatched this notion and started talking up this meme with reporters deemed friendly to their cause. No coincidence that the timing corresponds to the scheduling of hearings on immigration matters.

The GOP needs to realize that its biggest numbers come from hanging on to its base and longtime GOP-leaning independents. The worst thing that can happen is for those people to stay home. Giving in on this issue will cause them to do exactly that.

The number of potential Hispanic converts is *greatly* exaggerated. The majority are hardcore Democrats.

Bush would have been better off not opening up the can of worms in the first place.

That was the biggest can of worms he brought to the party.

I vividly recall we were having a knock-down drag-out about immigration here on FR in the days and literally hours before 9/11. Bush wasted no time in giving up our border.

And IIRC, he made an emergency trip to Mexico City within a week of 9/11, to take back the promises he'd made only weeks earlier.

IF the press would QUIT calling ILLEGAL ALIENS "immigrants", half of the rhetoric problem would be solved.

The RATS in the MSM have sufficiently muddied the waters to confuse in the minds of the sheeple the difference between legitimate immigrants (of whatever origin) and ILLEGAL ALIENS.

Yeah, the RHETORIC is hurting the pubbies, because they cannot get the message out through the fog of MSM BS.

“He’s an idiot.”

Sure is. What he fails to mention is that a lot and I mean a lot Reagan Democrats and independents feel the same way as most conservatives.

This coalition will outnumber the liberals and open borders crowd ANYDAY OF THE WEEK! and then some.

Mexicans won't be happy until they turn the US into the same craphole that Mexico is...including a corrupt socialist government... if that's what they wanted they should have just stayed where the were...
