Huh? Then how did those first cells ever survive long enough to 'mutate'? Replication is one of the mechanisms by which biological (and some chemical systems) effect mutation/change. Evolution is only predicated on differentiation and a selection function. The mechanisms used to generate the required differentiation are system dependent and not particularly relevant to evolution per se.
