Portland council meeting paralyzed with shock after member asked first Latino lawmaker to repeat what he had just said 'in English'

A Portland council meeting was shocked into silence after a member asked the first Latino councilman to repeat what he said in English, despite him speaking the language perfectly.

Councilor Juan Carlos González had responded to a question posed by fellow member Mary Nolan about an agenda item dealing with the city's Supportive Housing Services The Oregonian first reported.

Nolan, who goes by they/them pronouns, had asked the bill's sponsors, which includes González, to define what they meant by regionalism in the policy.

'My concern and worry is that in the definition of regionalism, you're moving forward, or that you had - that we talked about - includes decimating funding to Washington and Clackamas County,' he responded in part, while speaking perfect English.

'There's language that is kind of very needs-based and that to me is like sending signals to some really strong shifts in the framework of SHS entirely.'

Nolan responded by asking: 'Councilor, can you say that in English? I don't understand what you just said.'

The comment caused the entire board to pause in shock, with Councilman Ashton Simpson putting his head in his hands.

González sat in silence for a moment before responding: 'Um, okay. Let me try to repeat that in English, which is the language I was speaking.'

Two days later, Nolan took it upon herself to apologize to González in front of the entire council, but first in Spanish, then in English.

'On reflection, I realized one of my questions to you on Tuesday [February 24] during our discussion of the RPOC [Regional Policy and Oversight Committee] disrespected you, as well as people in our audience,' she said on February 26.

They/Them Nolan promised to give 'more thought and sensitivity' to her future comments.

Dumbasses in portland and dm.

The comment is characteristic slang for “layman’s terms.”

Ditto - Reminds me when I was on contract to a three letter Government agency, and we were told not to use the phrase, ‘rule of thumb’

EXACTLY SO. It has nothing to do with English vs. Spanish or any other language, per se.

It was "Please say that in terms that a normal lay person can understand."

Geez. and for that he/she/they apologized??? WTF

Exactly. It’s the same as “Stop speaking bureaucratic gobbledegook. Explain it.”

Thin-skinned wokesters.

Since the Latino speaks perfect English, the comment was just routine sarcasm about the content or meaning of what was being said.

Regardless - any day a Democrat commits accidental political suicide, is a good day.

Shows how out of touch they/them/it is. Every word or action which can be linked to some term which reminds the audience of prejudice is deemed racist. These people are obsessive lunatics and should be kept out of society....

Like the old “niagara false” skit...they behave just like that..

Words are meant to help aid in clear communication.

I know that is English because I understand the individual words but the way they are arranged has resulted in gobbledygook.
