Though the self-appointed fiefdoms (”Kings” and other forms of “leaders”) in Arabia and among the “Gulf States” are tyrants politically and still hold religious conversion from Islam a crime, it should still be understood that (a) Khashoggi was only a self-professed “journalist” and won accolades from westerners for exposes of the Saudis but did so as a worker for the Muslim Brotherhood, to try to penetrate the Saudi population with Muslim Brotherhood adherents, and (b) therefor the Saudis, quite rightly, saw Khashoggi as a existential threat. There are tons of journalists all over the Middle East they could have gave after for purely “false journalist” reasons, but they didn’t. They knew Khashoggi was doing the bidding of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Does that “excuse” the murder of Khashoggi? Maybe not, but it makes it understandable.
