Even if the interactions as observed are only low energy particle exchanges, and not "real" fusion, it's still producing energetic neutrons.

They create HEAT...

That was my first thought also. Those same triple tracks are shown when a proton encounters a Boron¹¹ ion.

I would suggest to these researchers that they should infuse the experiment with some decaborane.

And look on the bright side; we're getting rid of carbon!
