There certainly are a lot of goons on this thread. I get a kick out of it.
The only sanctimonious righteousness I see on this thread is from Jeb, who is deliberately blurring the debate.
We have commented on FR time and time again that the answer of the Dems to failure is to demand we do more of what has failed in the past.
So what is President Bush wanting to do regarding illegal immigration? More of what has failed in the past. We've passed new laws in the past that simply don't get enforced. We've granted amnesty in the past and it just led to more illegals coming here and hoping for the next amensty. We've done it Bush's way for two decades - and the problem has gotten worse. Doing more of what has failed should not be a GOP approach.
What we need to do is more of what has worked. Build more fencing - where strong fencing has been built, it has worked. Improve enforcement. Crack down on employers hiring illegals. And work to eliminate government-paid benefits to illegals.
That is what the GOP House wants - and they are the most representative of the GOP base. Bush has drifted further and further away from the base, as have the likes of McCain and Specter. Nothing less than the future of the GOP is at stake - and ironically over the stubborn desire of key pubbies to demand that we do more of what fails.
Plus it gives the pompus a chance to sniff in disgust at the riffraff.
