47 is an interesting number in it's on right. You can generate a sequence of primes by starting with 2, then multiplying each number by 2 and adding 1. 47 is the last prime in this sequence before you produce a composite number

Here's the sequence:

2,5,11,23,47

The next number is 95, which is a composite. (The proof of which is left as an exercise).

Thanks. I haven't done proofs since I was in high school, and I wouldn't even know how to begin at this point in my life, so, I'll just take your word for it. :)

From the starting point of 2, that sequence appears to continue by adding 3*2^(n-1) to the previous number in the sequence.

LOL, I like that! I think I'll put it in my profile. hehe

In actuality, the real reason behind my name is it was the first thing that popped into my head when registering. I really only signed up so that all the post times could be converted to EST. (different time zones always confuse me). I never realized how addicting the actual POSTING part could/would be. hehe

But I like your explaination murdoog. :) That, and yes "inflation" is the reason 42 isn't the answer to everything anymore. ;) (Edgerunner)
