Students at Howenstine High Magnet School will be collecting donations for troops serving in Afghanistan as part of Make a Difference Day.
But the students' efforts are not a one-day deal. Instead, Corrine Blum's service learning class decided to adopt a Marine unit as a yearlong project.
They sent a box of letters and personal items to the troops last month and are now planning to adopt an Army unit.
The project began when Blum told her students she was planning to send a package to a family friend serving in Afghanistan.
She asked her students if they wanted to write letters to add to it.
"So they wrote the letters, and next thing you know we're gathering items to send over," Blum said.
"It started from a tiny seed and it just keeps growing." Now they are asking the public to make its way to the campus 555 S. Tucson Boulevard from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to drop off donations and cards today.
They are looking for hygiene products, games, cards, holiday items, baseball caps, bandannas, sunscreen, socks, scarves and gloves.
I would assume by Mail/UPS/FedEX would work too.
WE did this in my area in 2007-8 for the Paratroopers in Afghanistan - we mailed over 50 boxes - and the kids made a special plaque honoring them - We;re gearing up again
We had both the town and the schools involved
