TV ads about Iraq war causing controversy

A new television ad running on TV stations throughout Minnesota is creating controversy because of its pro-war message.

Last week, when KARE 11 began running the ad, which is paid for by the "Progress for America Voter Fund," a number of viewers called the station to voice concerns.

"It was such a distorted, extreme point of view," said one viewer.

Another said, "It was run during the opening ceremonies of the Olympics last night. I think that was the worst possible taste you could have had."

Viewer anger has been directed at the ad, which features Minnesota veterans trying to build support for the war in Iraq.

The Progress for America Voter Fund spent more than $700,000, in the Twin Cities market, to get the ad on the air.

The fund is the same group that spent millions of dollars attacking John Kerry in the 2004 presidential campaign and has continued running ads promoting President Bush's policies and nominees.

In the latest ad, one of the lines most troubling to viewers is this one delivered by a Marine reservist from Woodbury:

"You'd never know it from the news reports, but our enemy in Iraq is al Qaeda," says Lt. Col. Bob Stephenson. "The same terrorists who killed 3,000 Americans on 9/11."

On Monday, Stephenson said the ad technically is accurate, because al Qaeda has been in Iraq since the U.S. invasion. In July 2004, the commission appointed by Congress to study 9/11 reported there was no link between the 9/11 attack and Saddam Hussein.

"I'd like to remind everybody that the ad does not claim that the U.S. went into Iraq looking for al Qaeda," he said.

Stephenson also said he has received several calls from family and friends who've seen the ad.

But former Marine Andrew Borene, who's now running for state senate as a Democrat, says "good Americans can say things that aren't true," and the ad does not match what he called "objective reality."

"I'm concerned that (the Bush administration) spent more time working on the spin operation - and PR operations here in America - than they have working to accomplish the actual mission in Iraq."

As for KARE-11's position, general manager John Remes issued a statement saying, "The station neither agrees nor disagrees with the messages in advertising, but one of our responsibilities is to be an advocate for freedom of expression and to provide a marketplace of ideas."

The ad is scheduled to run through next Wednesday.

If you have seen these, You know there are 100% Right On!

The First time I saw them on TV I went “ All right! It’s about time”

I have friends & relatives. Both male & female that have been to both “Big Sandboxes” And what I hear from them, Is nothing like I see in the news.

Let’s FReep this and all stations that air these commercials and thank them for putting them on.

In the story they tell of all the negative phone calls & Emails they have gotten. Let them know you agree with these ad’s and not to listen to the few Freedom haters out there.

Where are the GOP ads supporting our troops?
They had money for the Supreme Court ads, why not our troops?

It's sad that private citizens need to pay to have the truth put on TV, while the Dims and the MSM spew lies for free. Thank God for conservative radio.

Any military person who claims to be a Democrat has a self hate complex. Witness Hackett the "war hero" in Ohio. He has served his usefulness to the Dems and now is pushed aside for another run of the mill lunatic left wacko.

Some of us are hardheaded and dont believe the Democrats really do hate us. They will learn.

He should not be concerned. He should recognize that this war is being fought on multiple fronts and most importantly on the information front. We are engage in an information war that will be more decisive than the actual on-the-ground fighting. Our military has the will to win and the means to defeat any force that could be mounted against them militarily. They are hamstrung, however, by people with attitudes like Mr. Borene when it comes to the critical battle, the information war. I hope someone is finding the means and resources to fight this fight. Congress appears to be against the administration's efforts because they won't fund DoD info war efforts. They claim that any such activity is political propaganda. This attitude leave us defenseless and results in the anti-victory neurolinguistic programming that is occurring everyday in the mainstream media. Thank God for the internet.

I wish George Orwell were here to see what is happening...

So now Dems are reinterpreting truth and fact as objective reality.

Coming soon, to a vocabulary near you.

Objective reality.

The President has hired 150,000 people to "spin" the news??? Talk about living in a fantasy.
