This is an imperfect world. We do not always have the luxury of avoiding generalization for the sake of perfect justice.
For example, let’s say during WW2, our President became convinced that there was an old lady living in a Japanese city, who had never desired the war, contributed to it, or in any other conceivable fashion deserved to suffer in it. In fact, there’s one such in every square mile of Japan. What should be done?
There comes a time when, for the sake of survival, people must polarize. There can be no luxurious exception-making. There can be only “our side” and “their side” and innocent people are going to be experiencing unfair, harsh events, possibly dying. But the sooner people choose sides and fight, the sooner evil is defeated and the fewer innocent suffer and die.
So we firebomb the venerable old lady’s city, and every other until we win, and we are sorry we were left with no ideal options.
There are worse things than sweeping generalizations. There’s allowing evil to advance on an entire nation, continent, world — because we’re too intellectually fastidious to act.
Meanwhile, every muslim on the planet is obliged to follow the dictates of the quran as the revealed word of God. When push comes to shove — when they are required to get on this side, or that side, where do you think they will go? Each will be asked, are you a citizen of Holland, or a muslim? are you a citizen of the UK, or a muslim? American, or muslim? They won’t have any middle ground either.
When the time comes, your affable westernized muslim neighbor will betray your whereabouts to your jihadist neighbor who wants to behead you and enslave your orphans.
Idealism often ends dripping from a pole, held aloft by the fittest idealist.
