Beyond a shadow of the doubt, Archie "The Stomper" Gouldie was the biggest homegrown star ever in Stampede Wrestling and one of the greatest talents to survive the training in the Hart Family Dungeon. But his tale, which ended Saturday with his death at age 78 79, is much more than just that. It's the story of a small-town boy from tiny Carbon, Alberta (pop. 600) who made it big at home and abroad as the vicious Mongolian Stomper.

Wrestling is a tricky business. Trying to present an entertaining show often means taking a few risks with content. And with those risks come the possibility of doing something that comes off very badly for the audience. It's not just a bad gimmick or character. It's an angle or another move that is hard to watch. Sometimes, it's because it's so bad, others because it just affects you the wrong way but either way, it's a bit that crosses a line big time. WWE are naturally big offenders here, especially during the "Attitude Era" where they were throwing out so...

With a chance to clinch at least a share of the Big Ten regular-season championship on the line, the top-ranked Iowa wrestling team steps onto the big stage today. The Hawkeyes are expected to compete in front of the largest crowd to ever watch a collegiate dual meet in their noon matchup with defending NCAA champ Penn State. A sellout crowd of at least 16,000 is anticipated at the Bryce Jordan Center, where the Nittany Lions established the existing record of 15,996 a year ago for a dual against Pittsburgh. That doesn’t impress the Hawkeyes’ fifth-ranked 125-pounder Thomas Gilman, one...

Just got back from Foxcatcher and yes I'm a moviholic. Big build up for the three lead actors (Carrell, Tatum, and Ruffalo). If your comment is Who dat? You probably clicked onto the wrong thread. Save us all some time. Possible support nomination for Ruffalo and Tatum as the Schultz brothers, probably the two best known and influential collegiate and US Olympic wrestlers. Carrell plays John E. du Pont in a tour de force. Possiblly best actor nom. If you're used to the comic actor, the Office, 40 year old virgin etc., you may be very surprised at how well...

A WWF legend who once wrestled headliners like Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant is now a double amputee living in poverty in rural Mississippi. Now all James Harris, who rose to fame as Kamala the Ugandan Giant in the 1980s, has left from those days as a pro wrestler on the national stage are his memories. And with his continued optimism in the face of nightly dialysis, a tragic family story and mounting bills to pay, Harris hopes to put those memories down on paper in an autobiography called Kamala Speaks.
