  • Apple's scariest bug this week: Your device pwned over Wi-Fi

The iMessage vulnerability got a lot of attention, but another bug allows for remote execution over Wi-Fi, which is a much bigger threat. Apple released new versions of several operating system products earlier this week, fixing vulnerabilities in OS X El Capitan and iOS 9 among others. Because encryption and Apple are big news these days, the attention mostly went to an admittedly interesting flaw in Apple's encryption for iMessage, reported by a research team, led by well-known cryptographer Matthew Green. But the bug is not an easy one to exploit and doesn't even expose a lot. There are much...

Obamas bemoan White House wi-fi 46 minutes ago From the section US & Canada The Obamas have lamented patchy wi-fi coverage in the White House during a TV interview. There are a "lot of dead spots", President Obama revealed during a pre-Super Bowl interview on CBS. "It can be a little sketchy," added Michelle. The couple's daughters, Sasha and Malia, were "just irritated by it", she said. Mr Obama traditionally does an interview ahead of the biggest American Football game of the year. The president added he had been trying to improve the wi-fi "for the next group of folks".

Because of changes in my household there is now a need for major TV. So I have upgraded from the basic for my garage tenant to standard that has almost 200 channels. Now I have to purchase a modem and Wi-Fi. I talked to the cable guy. I need Wi-Fi that will travel over 60feet and over three stories. I need a modem that is Time Warner compliant that will bring in over 300 doo-hickies. Is there any one out there who understands this? I have to shop tomorrow and send back the TW modem. Hello FReeper friends. For the first time in several years, I've got a few bucks to spare. I'd like to finally upgrade from my old CRT television to a flat-screen TV. I'm also investigating the various options for streaming video to the TV via WiFi. I'm looking at devices like Roku and Amazon's FireTV -- especially because Amazon is having a Black Friday deal on the FireTV stick. However, the TVs that I'm looking at all are WiFi enabled. So here's my question: unless I really, really want features specific to FireTV, do I really need it (or Roku) if...
  • Apple iOS 9 feature Wi-Fi Assist could lead to huge iPhone bills

On by default, feature automatically switches to cellular signal when Wi-Fi is weak If you've upgraded to iOS 9, you should be aware that it comes with a new feature – enabled by default – that could make your next wireless bill a lot bigger. Wi-Fi Assist automatically switches your phone from Wi-Fi to a cellular connection when the Wi-Fi signal is poor. That's helpful if you're in the middle of watching a video or some other task on the internet that you don't want interrupted by spotty Wi-Fi service. "But this also means eating through your 500 MB data...
  • Could a Freeper answer a question about bandwidth?

    09/23/2015 7:13:12 AM PDT · by LouAvul · 27 replies
I subscribe to Netflix and Amazon. My ISP is Cox and the Cox box is situated next to the tv. There's also a Samsung DVD/streaming movie box next to the tv. Netflix movies stream fine. The problem is with Amazon. I can watch older (picture Paul Newman in "The Hustler", B&W) movies but with newer movies I'm getting, "Insufficient bandwidth" message. However, on my computers I can stream those movies just fine. Why is there insufficient bandwidth on the tv streaming just for newer (HD) movies? And just on Amazon? Finally, how can this be fixed? thanks
  • America's crackdown on open-source Wi-Fi router firmware – THE TRUTH (new FCC regulations)

Analysis America's broadband watchdog is suffering a backlash over plans to control software updates to Wi-Fi routers, smartphones, and even laptops. In a proposed update [PDF] to the regulator's rules over radiofrequency equipment, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) would oblige manufacturers to "specify which parties will be authorized to make software changes." In addition, it proposes that "modifications by third parties should not be permitted unless the third party receives its own certification." While the intent is to make the FCC's certification of the next generation of wireless equipment faster and more flexible, open source advocates were quick to notice...
  • Cell Phone WiFi

I'm thinking of upgrading my cell phone. My car has Bluetooth but my phone can't even take pictures. So I see these phones with Bluetooth and along with that most say WiFi. I have one of Sprints original contracts at $15 a month. Of course there is no internet. texting or whatever. So when a phone says WiFi what does that mean? Does the phone have some type of browser that can access a free WiFi independent of the phones phone software? Pardon my ignorance and thanks. And I'm looking at used phones, new phones require me to drop my...

An Oklahoma woman pulled a knife on a group of teen boys after getting angry over the poor Wi-Fi connection at a Taco Bell, police said. Amber Lynn Henson was frustrated about the Tahlequah restaurant's internet speed on Thursday when she went to a drinking fountain to cool off. But a group of unwitting youngsters blocked the 48-year-old's way, reports the Tahlequah Daily Press. "The boys were kind of in the way of the drink fountain and she had to squeeze through them to get her drink," said Tahlequah Police chief Nate King. "She got agitated and spilled her drink...
  • Warning: Windows 10 will share your Wi-Fi key with your friends' friends (and FB friends, and...)

    The Register ^ | June 30, 2015 | Simon Rockman
A Windows 10 feature, Wi-Fi Sense, smells like a security risk: it shares access to password-protected Wi-Fi networks with the user's contacts. So giving a wireless password to one person grants access to everyone who knows them. That includes their Outlook.com (nee Hotmail) contacts, Skype contacts and, with an opt-in, their Facebook friends. There is method in the Microsoft madness – it saves having to shout across the office or house “what’s the Wi-Fi password?” – but ease of use has to be tamed with security. If you wander close to a wireless network, and your friend knows the password,...

From using cell phones and computers to watching movies online, wireless technology has made life easier. But now, some say there is a serious downside. As CBS2’s Maurice Dubois explained, there are those who claim that exposure to wi-fi is making people sick, and some people don’t even know it. “Brain fog. That’s my worst problem. A brain fog,” Suzanne Hoyt said. Hoyt said that nothing prepared her for the rush of symptoms that she suddenly developed. “Headaches, perspiration, pain in my jaws and my heart. It’s like physical expansion of the heart,” she said. Hoyt said it all started...
  • GAO reports warns hackers could bring down plane using passenger Wi-Fi

The finding by the Government Accountability Office presents chilling new scenarios for passengers. The report doesn't suggest it would be easy to do, or very likely. But it points out that as airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration attempt to modernize planes and flight tracking with Internet-based technology, attackers have a new vulnerability they could exploit. The avionics in a cockpit operate as a self-contained unit and aren't connected to the same system used by passengers to watch movies or work on their laptops. But as airlines update their systems with Internet-based networks, it's not uncommon for Wi-Fi systems to...

Lenovo Has Been Selling Laptops with Malware Pre-Installed Computer maker Lenovo has been shipping laptops prepackaged with malware that makes you more vulnerable to hackers — all for the sake of serving you advertisements. Made by a company called “Superfish,” the software is essentially an Internet browser add-on that injects ads onto websites you visit. Besides taking up space in your Lenovo computer, the add-on is also dangerous because it undermines basic computer security protocols. That’s because it tampers with a widely-used system of official website certificates. That makes it hard for your computer to recognize a fake bank website,...

When looking for the perfect hotel, its Wi-Fi service is the most important factor, according to new research. A survey on important factors when searching for accommodation revealed that 67 per cent of travellers are most concerned with Wi-Fi, above any other factor. The internet connection ranked higher than the hotel's location, a good night's sleep and friendly staff.

Yesterday, my girlfriend and I borded an Amtrak passenger train in Stockton to travel to visit her friends in Visalia for Thanksgiving. Amtrak offers its passengers free WIFI as part of their amenities on the trip. As part of the log on, it specifies that Amtrak block access to "offensive" web sites, but otherwise allows free access to the Internet. I agreed to their conditions and found myself connected. Four attempts to connect to FreeRepublic resulted in being notified that my browser could not connect to the server! Thinking FR might be down, I turned off my WIFI, and reverted...

I am walking through my north London neighbourhood on an unseasonably warm day in late autumn. I can hear birds tweeting in the trees, traffic prowling the back roads, children playing in gardens and Wi-Fi leaching from their homes. Against the familiar sounds of suburban life, it is somehow incongruous and appropriate at the same time. As I approach Turnpike Lane tube station and descend to the underground platform, I catch the now familiar gurgle of the public Wi-Fi hub, as well as the staff network beside it. On board the train, these sounds fade into silence as we burrow...

Hedy Lamarr, a Hollywood actress known for her good looks and classic come-hither bedroom gaze, also played a key role in developing cell phone technology widely used today.Born 100 years ago today in Vienna, the actress made a lesser-known contribution to wireless communication when she tried to defuse a potential military threat during World War II. To prevent remote-controlled torpedoes from being hijacked, she helped develop an early version of spread spectrum communication, which is part of the basis for wireless technologies such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.Her successes remind us that women were central to the invention of many technologies...
