China’s growth slows to weakest level in 27 years China’s economy expanded at its slowest rate in nearly three decades in the third quarter, hit by cooling domestic demand and a protracted US trade war, data showed today. Chinese gross domestic product expanded 6% in the three months from July to September, down from 6.2% in the second quarter, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The reading – in line with an AFP survey of 13 analysts – is the worst quarterly figure since 1992 but within the government’s target range of 6-6.5% for the whole year. China’s...

Still in the prototype stages, this medical device is set to 'observe bodily movements and functions', and is capable of monitoring the progression of certain diseases. 'Disguised as a flower pot, the omnipresent detection system can observe bodily movements and functions, such as heart rate, gait, and ultimately the progression of certain diseases, to help prevent negative outcomes that may be costly or worst, fatal,' Barclays analysts wrote in a note following the event. It seems at-home health monitoring devices are the wave of the future, as earlier this year, scientists unveiled high tech 'smart' pajamas that monitor heartbeat, breathing...

After mass shootings in Southaven, Mississippi; Dayton, Ohio; and Midland, El Paso and Odessa, Texas, public demand for sensible gun reform once more soared. And once more, Republican politicians, led by President Donald Trump, were intimidated into inaction by the gun lobby, led by the National Rifle Association. Remarkably, it was America’s largest retailer — Walmart — that exhibited the courage politicians lacked. It was in a Walmart store in El Paso where a gunman armed with an assault-style rifle, roused by the hate-filled rhetoric about a Latino “invasion” of our country, shot 48 people, killing 22. Walmart CEO Doug...

Walmart's growing grocery business throughout New York state is prompting the retailer to add 80 jobs at its Johnstown distribution center this fall. "The throughput at this building has nearly doubled [since it opened 20 years ago]," said general manager Andy Walton. "We have been growing by 10% to 15% over the past three years." The nearly 1 million-square-foot distribution center employs 750 forklift operators, order fillers and support staff who supply food and nonperishable goods to 117 Walmart Supercenters between Rochester, eastern Long Island and northern New York state. The warehouse also supplies perishable food to 21 Sam's Club...

I live in exactly the right location to see the outcome of a grand experiment. The pilot Walmart Supercenter is located in Dallas, Georgia. So am I. On Friday the 13th, the CEO of Walmart cut the ribbon at the grand opening. Sadly, I only learned about this grand opening on the morning of September 14. There had been no publicity while the store was being remodeled over the last 12 months. So, what you are about to read is based on original research conducted on the cheap on the afternoon of September 14. 1. A Right-Hand Turn My house...

There is an ongoing thrust by the fanatical pushers for a disarmed population, to enlist corporate America to their cause. Understandably, corporate entities are uneasy about outright support for any political faction; come out strongly on one side or the other, you are potentially alienating 20-30 percent of your customers. The 50% that are not strongly engaged in politics are unlikely to respond. When it comes to Second Amendment issues, there are about 5 million NRA members and 100 million gun owners. There are about 30 million people that think owning a gun is immoral. The numbers game falls...

Ammo Grrrll waves BYE BYE, WALMART, BYE BYE. She writes: Et tu, Walmart? Seriously? Do you have no idea who your customer base is? Well, whatever. I’m done. It’s a shame, too, because Walmart is the definite Big Dog shopping emporium in our Dusty Little Village. For groceries, I have two other choices in town, one of which I have always preferred anyway: Bashas. It is a pleasant, to-scale kind of local place with good meat and produce, sun screens over parking, the most customer-friendly cashiers, and slightly higher prices on canned goods. So be it. I’m willing to pay...

Gun rights activists in Texas are testing Walmart’s request not to open-carry in stores by doing just that. David Amad, the vice president of Open Carry Texas, told The New York Times the 38,000 members of his group have openly carried their guns inside Walmart stores since the retailer announced last week it is “respectfully requesting” customers to no longer openly bring guns into its stores.

When Walmart made its most recent decision to flip the firearms industry the bird by changing multiple policies, Hornady Manufacturing reminded all of us that they stopped doing business with the retail giant back in 2007. Jason Hornady's quote from 2007, shows that the company sticks to its values and doesn't shy away from making tough decisions. Jason is the vice president of Hornady, and we were able to pick his brain about his past dealings with Walmart and what he thinks the effects will be from Walmart's decision. RECOIL: Why did Hornady decide to stop selling to Walmart back...
