Gov. Brown needs to to veto this shameless bill. If lawmakers aren't interested in rubbing shoulders with the residents of their district, they have no business representing them Just as the 2018 legislative session was winding down last week, California lawmakers sent Gov. Jerry Brown a bill that would allow them to live outside the districts in which they were elected and ostensibly represent. What’s next? Mayors who don’t have to live in the cities in which they were elected? City council members who do not have to live in their council districts?

WASHINGTON -- A separate redistricting case heard by the U.S. Supreme Court Tuesday has a Hispanic congressmen worried it could lead to giving the majority Anglo population a new tool to maintain political control despite changing demographics. The case challenges the practice in Texas to use census population to divide up the state into different legislative districts. That system, the same as used in Arizona, is based on a head count done every decade by the U.S. Census. But challengers contend that's not fair, as population does not equate with ability to vote. So they are asking the justices to...

An Egyptian court on Sunday ruled as unconstitutional a clause in the election law that draws voting districts, a verdict that is almost certain to delay parliamentary elections scheduled to start later this month. President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi said in a statement that he has ordered the government to adopt the “necessary legislative amendments” within a month to comply with the Supreme Constitutional Court's ruling. Another court is likely to rule later this month on whether the election should be delayed, but a date for the new vote would be decided by the Supreme Electoral Commission, which went into an emergency...

A decennial tradition that dates back 220 years to the days of George Washington continues today when federal census forms start arriving at more than 120 million households across the United States. But hanging over this 23rd U.S. census are concerns about a decline in participation. While the U.S. census has always evoked some resentment toward the feds for poking their nose into people's business, there's a sense that America's distrust of the government has reached greater heights and could contribute to poor census returns.
