Paul Volcker, the former chairman of the Federal Reserve under Presidents Carter and Reagan who later played a role in the Obama administration's response to the financial crisis of 2009, has died at the age of 92. Multiple media outlets reported that Volcker, who raised interest rates as the Fed's chief to combat inflation, had died. In the Obama years, Volcker reemerged to tout a rule, eventually called the Volcker rule, that put tougher constraints on big banks.

Almost everyone so far has provided worthless hearsay as did Fiona Hill who left by July 19th before the phone call, but Morrison was listening in on the phone call and said he heard nothing illegal and declated in testimony along with Volker there was Quid Pro Quo, bribery or extortion. She though appears to have lied through her teeth as even left-wing publications like Politico and others have confirmed Ukraine's role in 2016 election interference despite her attempts today to downplay their role. At the very least she would have blatantly and shamelessly provided a False Choice if both...

Republicans sounded a celebratory note as House Democrats' impeachment inquiry wrapped up another day of public hearings Tuesday evening, saying the day's witnesses had served only to highlight fundamental problems in the case against President Trump. “Did anyone ever ask you to bribe or extort anyone at any time during your time in the White House?" House Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Devin Nunes, R-Calif., asked at one point in Tuesday's afternoon hearing. Former National Security Council (NSC) aide Tim Morrison: "No." Former U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker: “No." Later, Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., hit the same notes in...

Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee have created a website on which they have released full transcripts of the testimony of Ambassadors Yovanovitch, McKinley, Volker, Sondland, Taylor; Lt. Col Vindland; Deputy Assistant Secretaries Kent and Cooper; NSC Senior Director for Europe and Russia Dr. Hill; and advisors to Ambassador Volker Catherine Croft and Christopher Anderson. The website is ... pretty flashy for a government page that's supposed to be informative? Lots of highlighting and the whole thing is called "Defend our Democracy" so y'know BARF ALERT... BUT... they do put (somewhat) redacted transcripts of the testimony online so we can...

In a secret interview, Rep. Adam Schiff, leader of the House Democratic effort to impeach President Trump, pressed former United States special representative to Ukraine Kurt Volker to testify that Ukrainian officials felt pressured to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden's son Hunter as a result of Trump withholding U.S. military aid to Ukraine. Volker denied that was the case, noting that Ukrainian leaders did not even know the aid was being withheld and that they believed their relationship with the U.S. was moving along satisfactorily, without them having done anything Trump mentioned in his notorious July 25 phone conversation...

Sources with firsthand knowledge of former U.S. envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker's testimony to House investigators told Fox News that he said he consulted with U.S. envoy to the European Union, Gordon Sondland, and President Trump's attorney, Rudy Giuliani, in August regarding a draft statement from Ukraine on corruption. The revelation came as Sondland prepared to testify Thursday in House Democrats' impeachment inquiry, which has revolved around a whistleblower’s complaint that Trump was pushing Ukraine’s leader into opening an investigation into Joe and Hunter Biden's business dealings in the country. Volker told House investigators at his Oct. 3 closed-door interview...

Gregg Jarrett and former federal prosecutor Andy McCarthy weighed-in Friday on newly released details of US diplomat Kurt Volker’s testimony regarding Ukraine; saying foreign leaders “were not pressured” by the Trump administration to pursue corruption allegations against Joe Biden. “Allow me to begin by stressing that you and the American people can be reassured and proud that the Department of State and the Department of Defense, and the professionals working there—civil and foreign service and military—have conducted themselves with the highest degree of professionalism, integrity, and dedication to the national interest. WASHINGTON — Kurt Volker, a former U.S. ambassador to NATO caught in the middle of a whistleblower complaint over the President Donald Trump’s dealings with Ukraine, resigned Friday from his post as special envoy to the Eastern European nation, according to a U.S. official. The official said Volker told Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday of his decision to leave the job, following disclosures that he had connected Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani with Ukrainian officials to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his family over allegedly corrupt business dealings. Giuliani has said he was in frequent contact...
  • Why the $250,000 tax threshold is so dangerous … It’s not indexed for inflation

Prior to 1981’s Kemp Roth Tax Act, which indexed tax brackets for inflation for the first time, Democrats were happy to watch inflation force taxpayers into higher and higher tax brackets. Bracket creep was the easy way to raise tax rates without putting themselves on record. The experience of the Carter years, with inflation (CPI) rates rising to over 13.5% made indexing a high priority for the incoming Reagan administration. And indexing has worked well. But there are reminders of disastrous consequences of unindexed tax legislation, most notably the Alternative Minimum Tax. The AMT was intended to rectify the problem...

Volcker: Don't Worry, No Inflation Or Deflation Coming Gregory White Oct. 26, 2010, 10:45 AM Paul Volcker has downplayed the threat of near-term inflation and deflation. The Chairman of President Obama's Economic Recovery Board didn't think deflation was a real threat at all, and thought inflation, "won't be a problem next year, it won't be a problem for several years." Volcker was also bullish on job opportunities for those just entering college now, suggesting the market would be much better when they graduate than it is today. Read the full story at CNBC >[snip]

On the show today, a rare interview with the former chairman of the Federal Reserve, Paul Volcker. He's, of course, currently a key adviser to President Obama. You will remember that in the 1970s, the United States was experiencing uncontrolled inflation, higher than at any time in its modern history. Savings were being...

Before Barack Obama said anything today about his second Glass-Steagall, the story was evident from who stood next to him, and who was banished down the row of public officials. To President Obama’s right was “this tall guy”, the 6′ 7″ Paul Volcker, who has until today been a lone voice in his administration calling for structural reform on Wall Street. Further along was Tim Geithner, the Treasury secretary, who has until now resisted it in favour of tighter regulation. If Mr Obama is serious, as he appears to be, he is enacting a reform that will strike at the heart of...

The Federal Reserve was blamed by a fellow regulator for contributing to the financial crisis on Thursday as the central bank and one of its former chairmen fought back against congressional moves to curb its powers. In unusually pointed criticism, Sheila Bair, chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, told the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission that “much of the crisis may have been prevented” had the Fed dealt with subprime mortgages seven years before it did. Regulators were wholly unprepared and ill-equipped for a systemic event,’ said Sheila Bair before the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission In New York, Paul Volcker,...

Volcker Assumes Smaller-Than-Expected Role With Obama By MONICA LANGLEY WASHINGTON -- As an early supporter of Barack Obama, Paul Volcker gave the young presidential candidate gravitas and advice. He frequently sat by Mr. Obama's side at key economic events, and started carrying a cellphone for the first time, just to be able to brainstorm with the candidate from the campaign trail. In the Obama White House, the role of the 81-year-old former chairman of the Federal Reserve has been more limited. The one-time central banker has been put in charge of a presidential advisory board that hasn't yet had a...

We are in the midst of the worst financial turmoil since the Great Depression. Absent bold action, matters could well get worse. Neither the markets nor the ordinary diet of regulatory orders, bank examinations, rating downgrades and investigations can do the job. Extraordinary emergency actions by the Federal Reserve and the Treasury to date, while necessary, are also insufficient to resolve the crisis. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the giants in the mortgage market, are overextended and now under new government protection. They are not in sufficiently robust shape to meet all the market's needs. The fact is that the...
