Michael and Karolina Tomaro went to court with the country's National Tax Authority about naming their daughter after the rock band. LONDON - In chilling videos shown to a jury Friday, men accused of plotting to bring down jetliners over the Atlantic called for revenge for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and praised Osama bin Laden. Six of the eight defendants videotaped messages denouncing the West for what they said was its suppression of Muslims, prosecutor Peter Wright said as he outlined his case to jurors at a London court. The defendants, all Britons with ties to Pakistan, are accused of plotting to blow up at least seven jetliners bound for the United States and Canada in 2006. Some of...

Today in music historyAlan Freed, the American D.J. who coined the term “rock and roll”, had his 1952 Rock ’n’ Roll Stage Show at a local arena cancelled when 30000 fans overcrowded the venue. Fire regulations allowed only 10000. The Guess Who released their biggest hit, “American Woman,” this week in 1970. Randy Bachman left the band four months later because of religious conflicts with the rock and roll lifestyle. Burton Cummings carried the band until 1975. Bob Dylan’s song, “Hurricane,” caused enough publicity to get Rubin “Hurricane” Carter released from jail in 1976. The song promoted Carter’s innocence and...

The Best Global Warming Videos on the Internet Some people have asked me for copies of, or links to videos that provide an alternative view to Gore’s “consensus” on anthropogenic (i.e., man caused) global warming (AGW). A few of these videos have been broadcast in the United States (e.g., Glenn Beck, John Stossel), but most have not and probably will not be seen. Easily the best ad Fred’s campaign has produced. Except, of course, they didn’t produce it. Some Fredhead with an editing suite and a knack for voiceover did — the second time today that a Republican politican’s production team has been outclassed by skilled hobbyists. Not a good omen, boys. Then again, has any Democratic ad made as big a splash as this? (VIDEO) A few odds and ends on ol’ Fred. First, swoon if you wish over his position on torture but it’s really no different than Bill Clinton’s, which isn’t a knock on Fred so much as a compliment...

CNN is defending its job in vetting questions for last night's debate, reports Politico's Kenneth Vogel: The retired general who quizzed Republican presidential candidates about gays and lesbians in the military was not the only person linked to a Democratic presidential candidate who got to ask a question at Wednesday’s CNN/YouTube debate. CNN also aired questions from supporters of Democratic candidates John Edwards and Barack Obama. And that’s fine by the network, which is standing by its question selection process and lashing out at critics who say the debate demonstrated CNN’s liberal bias. “We’re focused on the questions, not the...

Let's start with Wednesday night's CNN/YouTube debate. I'll have to admit. This is the most entertaining debate format of the season. While many of the questions are dumb, I like that the candidates are uneasy and having to roll with the punches. Here's a wrapup of the Republican version on Wednesday. But the biggest disappointment for me was that the guys at Red State Update didn't make the cut this time. Back in the summer, they were the hit of the Democratic Debate with a question about Al Gore. (see Joe Legge's Blog) But this time, they're questions were too...

Following the release of a new TV ad on Monday, the Mitt Romney campaign has been hitting the video game content issue hard this week, most notably during a swing through Colorado. Preacher Dan Smith turned a rap song about babes with booty into a spoof Internet hit, and used it to help create a new church for people who hate church. Dan Smith thinks Christians take themselves too seriously. Pastor Dan Smith's 'Baby Got Book' video, a big hit online, helped him start his Momentum Church. "We can be dorks," he says after Sunday service in suburban Cleveland. "We can be Ned Flanders and basically speak jargon that nobody understands." MADRID, Spain (AP) - 0302DV-Grand-Central A sketch of New York's Grand Central Terminal was found a year ago in the home of a suspect in the Madrid train bombings, Spanish and U.S. officials said Wednesday. The sketch and data were on a computer disk seized about two weeks after the March 11 train bombings in Madrid that killed 191 people last year, the newspaper El Mundo said. In New York, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the FBI had informed the Police Department about the existence of the data on the computer and the city responded by tightening security at transit centers....

How hot is user-generated content? Try a $1.65 billion valuation for a one-and-a-half-year-old company called YouTube. Or two consumer-created commercials for Doritos on the biggest advertising stage of the year--the Super Bowl. Whether consumers will invest their time and talents making product ads is up for debate. But what about an arena where many more people are a lot more passionate: politics. Consumer-generated political ads have the potential to change campaign marketing at its core. In fact, the revolution has already begun. The most talked-about, and probably most-viewed, ad for Campaign 2008 to date is titled "Vote Different." It was...

A very (VERY) convincing video documentary that the idea of man-made global warming is total bunk. The contributors to the documentary have impressive well-know scientific credentials, (including the co-founder of Greenpeace, and the head of the Meteorology Dept. at MIT) and follow the IDEOLOGY (that's what is is, not science) of Environmental Change from the 1970s to the present. It's a one hour and 15 minute video, but if you are at all interested in the topic, very well worth your time. Builds a convincing scientific case that our current warming trend is Solar related, not due to greenhouse gases....

NEWINGTON, Conn. -- On a recent evening in this quiet suburb, Matthew Fiddler hunched over a door lock, jiggling it with a pick and poking it with a wrench. In just a few moments, it popped open. Mr. Fiddler wasn't locked out and he isn't a thief. Instead, the 36-year-old father of four, clad in khakis and a blue button-down shirt, was seated around a table with a handful of people who pick locks for fun. The group, a chapter of Locksport International, gets together monthly to poke and prod everything from padlocks to dead-bolt cylinders. They swap tips, hold...

For more than 26 years, Congressman John P. "Jack" Murtha (D-Penn.) has not been truthful about his involvement in Abscam, court records and the complete video of his meeting with the FBI show. The Bush administration is taking its fight against illegal drugs to YouTube, the trendy internet video service that already features clips of wacky, drug-induced behaviour and step-by-step instructions for growing marijuana plants. The decision to distribute anti-drug, public service announcements and other videos over YouTube represents the first concerted effort by the US government to influence customers of the popular service, which shows more than 100 million videos per day. The administration was expected to announce the decision formally today. It said it was not paying any money to load its previously produced videos onto YouTube's service, so the program...

Dartmouth Professor Hany Farid already devised software tools to detect when someone has tampered with digital photos. His next challenge: determining whether video or audio files have been retouched. "I thought, 'This is going to be so much easier,' but it turns out to be much harder," Farid said. "In a minute (of) video, you are talking about thousands of images. Just the sheer mass of data that you have to contend with is challenging. You have memory and run-time issues that you don't have with (still) images." The Dartmouth Image Science Group is also releasing a series of tools...

A creepy handyman who secretly made hundreds of videotapes in restrooms at two Brooklyn High Schools won't have to do a day in prison a judge said yesterday. An 8-year-old boy accused of sexually assaulting a second-grade classmate last week at a St. Paul elementary school now faces expulsion. The incident happened on the playground at Four Seasons A+ Elementary, which holds classes year round, as students waited for buses just before the end of the day July 24. The boy is believed to have approached an 8-year-old girl on a slide, forced her to kiss his private parts and then simulated sex on her, according to school district officials and members of the girl's family. The slide was enclosed by a tube, making it impossible for the...

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Insurgents signaled the fight is still on after Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's death, posting an Internet video Saturday showing the beheading of three alleged Shiite death squad members in revenge for killing Sunnis. The video — as grisly as any the al-Qaida in Iraq leader issued — was clearly designed to quash hopes that the Sunni-dominated insurgency might change tactics by ending attacks on Shiite civilians and institutions, especially the police. Fellow Sunni insurgent groups sent condolences for al-Zarqawi in Internet messages Saturday and warned Sunnis not to cooperate with the Iraqi government, an apparent call for unity...

Are future national park trips for America’s youth likely to be on-line virtual experiences rather than the real thing? A University of Illinois at Chicago ecologist says there may be cause for concern. Oliver Pergams, research assistant professor in biological sciences at UIC, reports in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Environmental Management that a rise in at-home entertainment activity, such as playing video games and surfing the Internet, corresponds with a decline, in per capita terms, in visits to U.S. national parks. Rising oil prices showed a strong association as well. The turnaround began in 1988 after a...

CAIRO, Egypt - Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's new video marks a shift by the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq toward a less radical image, one that might appeal to the Iraqi insurgency more than the beheadings for which he's become notorious, analysts said Wednesday. The video released Tuesday, the first by al-Zarqawi that shows his face, features scenes of the black-garbed terrorist firing a gun and hunkered over a map plotting strategy. The Sunni Muslim extremist, 39, looks youthful and healthy in the springtime desert. "It's a departure from the past. There's no strident anti-Shiite rhetoric and no beheadings," said Joost...

NEW YORK - The creators of "Sesame Street" are releasing a new line of videos Tuesday targeted for children as young as six months, outraging some child-development experts who feel no form of TV or video is suitable for kids under 2. The DVDs — part of a series called "Sesame Beginnings" — are intended to be watched by parents along with their small children. Sesame Workshop developed the shows with help of experts from Zero to Three, a well-regarded nonprofit advocacy group. Despite that prestigious partnership, the project has drawn fire from other experts who note that the American...

Tunisian singer and dancer Najla is trying eagerly to return to the scenes, yet decisions to ban her music surround her. The most recent is Najla’s fourth music video for "Baghlat Fi Ismak" (I Mistake your Name). The music channel Mazzika was forced to delete a number of scenes in order to make it appropriate for the average viewer, but even after the deletion the clip is still considered too sexual.
