Roberto Escobar Gaviria, the older brother of the infamous Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, opened up in an exclusive interview with Greek Reporter which was held at one of Pablo’s last residences overlooking Medellin. Nicknamed El Osito (“Little Bear”), Roberto Escobar served as the former accountant of the notorious Medellin Cartel, which was responsible for up to 80 percent of the cocaine once smuggled into the United States. Asked by Greek Reporter what he has to say to the thousands of victims who suffered and died during the turbulent years of the cartel’s operations, he replied that: “We are the...

-snip- According to TDJC, Hernandez was released on parole for aggravated robbery on October 21, 2021, with a special condition of electronic monitoring. TDCJ also confirmed that Hernandez was "granted permission to be at the hospital with his significant other during delivery [of her child]." According to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by WFAA, Hernandez went to the hospital to visit his girlfriend, who had given birth to their child. In 2017, San Francisco’s top officials announced an audacious goal: Cut the city’s chronic homelessness number in half over the next five years. A few months earlier, the city had received support to help reach that goal — $100 million in pledged private expenditures from a nonprofit aiming for the same five-year reduction, complementing the city’s more than $250 million annual homelessness budget. “This is going to be huge,” then-Mayor Ed Lee told The Chronicle at the time about the initiative by nonprofit Tipping Point. “I do believe we’ll be able to cut chronic homelessness in half with this help.”...

Family members of murder defendant Isaiah Rivera-Perez and shooting victim Jaiden Connor filled nearly every seat in a Hillsborough County Superior Court hearing room Tuesday morning as a trial opened that will hinge on the state’s self-defense law. Homicide prosecutor Nicholas Chong Yen showed the jury a home security video that captures Connor, 17, running down Central Street and collapsing, where police found him with a bullet hole in his back. “He shot Jaden Connor in the back. He shot Jaden Connor while Jaden was running away from him,” said Chong Yen, an assistant New Hampshire attorney general. “That is...

Surveillance video caught a man entering a Phoenix phone store Saturday and brutally beating a female employee working alone behind the counter — punching and stomping on her 25 times in an unprovoked attack. Even when she screamed she was pregnant as a possible way of getting him to stop, the attacker kept beating her. The 22-year-old victim asked the man, "How can I help you?" as he approached the counter of the Cricket Wireless store near 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road around 5 p.m., KSAZ-TV reported. The man began to answer and then suddenly punched the woman, landing...

Juan Carlos Vasquez-Orozco, 22, who authorities say had been in the United States from Mexico illegally, also was convicted of assault with a firearm on three other deputies.

Drug overdose is now the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 50, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said Tuesday morning. Rosenstein, along with acting head of the Drug Enforcement Agency, Chuck Rosenberg, and other prominent officials in law enforcement addressed the media at the DEA’s headquarters in Arlington, VA to discuss the ongoing response to the nation’s staggering opioid epidemic. “We’re not talking about a slight increase. There’s a horrifying surge of drug overdoses in the United States of America. Some people say we should be more permissive, more tolerant, more understanding about drug use. I...

“We feel it necessary to show the other side of this horrible drug,” East Liverpool police officials wrote in a caption on the photo. “We feel we need to be a voice for the children caught up in this horrible mess.” The photo caused the country to shudder. And, then, the country forgot. Politicians forgot, too, said Lane. “Governor John Kasich said he was going to come to town and get to the bottom of this. He never did.” Meanwhile, the problems in East Liverpool are deepening. People are dying, yes, “but the broader dangers are ignored,” Lane said. “Think...

Investigators who nicknamed the street mixture have detected it or recorded overdoses blamed on it in Alabama, Georgia and Ohio. The drug looks like concrete mix and varies in consistency from a hard, chunky material to a fine powder. The substance is a combination of several opioids blamed for thousands of fatal overdoses nationally, including heroin, fentanyl, carfentanil — sometimes used to tranquilize large animals like elephants — and a synthetic opioid called U-47700. ... Last year, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration listed U-47700 in the category of the most dangerous drugs it regulates, saying it was associated with dozens...

By about 3 p.m. Friday, a county morgue in east Ohio was already full — and more bodies were expected. Rick Walters, an investigator for the Stark County coroner's office, had just left for two death scenes: a suicide and an overdose. From the road, he called the director of the Ohio Emergency Management Agency to ask for help. He needed more space, he explained — specifically, a cold-storage trailer to act as an overflow morgue. As with much of the United States, Ohio is in the throes of a heroin and opioid epidemic that shows no signs of abating.

The story fit the grim emerging genre of the opioid epidemic: addicted caregivers who imperil their young children, their very public failings instantly held up for excoriation on social media. Tamara and Jacob had abruptly been added to a national tableau, fused in the popular imagination with the Ohio couple slowly turning blue in their SUV while a 4-year-old watched from his carseat; the Milwaukee pair revived with Narcan in front of the woman’s 2-year-old son; the woman who overdosed in the toy aisle of a Lawrence dollar store, while her toddler wailed and pulled at her arm. Much less...
