WASHINGTON, April 26, 2007 – Iraq’s growing police force is technically competent and functioning as it should within the country’s legal system, a top U.S. police trainer said yesterday. The operational problems they have experienced are primarily the result of an unusually tumultuous security situation in Baghdad and elsewhere, said Army Brig. Gen. David Phillips, deputy commander of the Civilian Police Assistance Training Team and the senior military police officer in theater. “I believe the Iraqi police are getting very capable in handling the law enforcement type mission and traffic mission. The problem you have is ... that there’s a...

Work at the site resumed in 1993...

Sheep don't mix well with grizzly bears and wolves. Now they won't mix at all on more than 70,000 acres in the Absaroka-Beartooth wilderness. A 74,000-acre sheep grazing allotment south of Big Timber in the Gallatin National Forest has been permanently closed and the ranchers who used it for generations have been paid to move their sheep elsewhere... The agreement is the eighth -- and second-largest -- in the greater Yellowstone ecosystem in recent years that has led to the retirement of about 300,000 acres from grazing. The latest involves the Ash Mountain and Iron Mountain allotments used for generations...

Repulsive "Wifely Expectations" pact emerges in Iowa kidnap case FEBRUARY 17--This country, as you know, is filled with the deranged. And then there's Travis Frey, a 33-year-old Iowa man who is facing charges that he tried to kidnap his own wife (not to mention a separate child pornography rap). Frey, prosecutors contend, apparently is a rather demanding guy. In fact, he actually drew up a bizarre four-page marriage document--a "Contract of Wifely Expectations"--that sought to establish guidelines for his spouse in terms of hygiene, clothing, and sexual activities. In return for fulfilling certain requirements, Frey (pictured right) offered "Good Behavior...

Iran has removed seals from a nuclear facility and will begin research there in the coming hours, a top Iranian nuclear official has announced. The move ends a two-year suspension of research, and could result in Tehran being referred to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions. Germany on Monday described Iran's planned move as "very, very ominous". Western countries fear Iran's nuclear programme could be used to make atomic bombs, but Tehran denies such a goal.

WASHINGTON - Iran is closing in on production of nuclear weapons and even U.N. sanctions may not deter the aggressive government in Tehran, a top State Department official said Friday. Describing the Iranian government as "very aggressive, very determined to develop nuclear weapons," Robert Joseph, undersecretary for arms control and international security, dismissed Iran's contention that it seeks only civilian nuclear power. "We know this is not the case," Joseph said at the University of Virginia's Miller Center in Charlottesville. Iran has methodically taken all but one last step to turn out nuclear weapons, he said. "Once they begin to...

Terror threat from 'very many' Muslim men, says Met chief By John Steele, Home Affairs Correspondent (Filed: 04/03/2005) Britain faces a potential terrorist threat from "very many" Muslim men who returned to Britain after spending time in training camps in Afghanistan, the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police said yesterday. Sir Ian Blair, whose force, with MI5, leads anti-terrorism work in Britain, was asked if he supported the assertion of the Prime Minister earlier this week that there were "several hundred people in the UK plotting terror attacks". The commissioner told LBC radio in London: "Yes, I am aware of the...

SYRACUSE NY--Something didn't smell quite right to North Syracuse police when a village resident came in Friday looking for a little help. What stunk was Brian D. Bush, calling it very positive and saying it set an agenda for cooperation in the coming years. "We are satisfied with the talks and their results. Q: How dumb is Susan Estrich? A: Susan Estrich is so dumb she thinks a manilla folder is a Filipino contortionist. Hey, Susan: Who's buried in Grant's Tomb? In case you had better things to do, like shampoo the cat, Estrich published a much-commented upon column claiming: "The trouble with Democrats, traditionally, is that we're not mean enough." Susan, put down that crack pipe! [More]

Saw and heard today, August 24, 2004. 527 Pacs coming out with 14 Ads against our president, during the National Republican Convention. The one I saw is very bad and if not a smear, then I don't know what. Showing everything from fish, dogs, babies, men at work, kids, pregnant moms, smoking "the equivalent of a pack of cigarettes a day" because George Bush (not president bush) -- has put a complete stop to environmental safeguard laws. (A complete lie)

Scenes of civilians caught in the crossfire of Liberia's civil war this week have put more pressure on President Bush to send in US troops. While such preemptive action would probably save lives, it would also showcase the UN's weakness in acting on internal conflicts, especially in Africa. Ending wars by force is difficult for the United Nations, whose "blue helmets" are trained mainly to prevent old conflicts from reigniting. Most nations in the UN aren't willing to contribute to an international combat force, and would rather let military powers such as the US or France put their soldiers at...

By Paul Eckert SEOUL (Reuters) - The U.N. atomic watchdog said on Thursday North Korea 's move to activate nuclear facilities was "very worrying" as South Korea vowed to play a leading role in stopping its communist neighbor's brinkmanship. The Vienna-based U.N. inspection agency -- the International Atomic Energy Agency -- said North Korea had moved 1,000 fresh fuel rods to a nuclear reactor that produces plutonium used in nuclear warheads. "The big worry (is) if they start to operate the reprocessing plant that will produce plutonium, which...

The word from Moose is that the DC Sniper wanted folks here to electronically transfer $10 million to some account in which he presumably has an interest. Is this really something a psychopath would know how to set up? I'm mean, without bragging, I hold myself to be a pretty smart guy. But I have no idea how I would go about setting us such an account or whom I would approach to begin my search. Now if I were a friend of Yasser Arafat, or some similar lowlife, I'm sure I'd know whom to approach, and maybe even what...
