CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- A federal judge granted class-action status to a lawsuit that contends Tyson Foods Inc. (TSN), the world's largest meat producer, depressed wages by hiring illegal immigrants at eight plants in Tennessee, Alabama, Indiana, Missouri, Texas and Virginia. Howard W. Foster of Chicago, an attorney for Tyson employees, described the ruling as a "very big step." It allows him to seek damages for thousands of workers at the eight plants instead of just the four original plaintiffs. Roger Dickson of Chattanooga, an attorney for the Springdale, Ark., based company, said he hadn't had a chance to read...

Just got this email from WSB-AM’s producer Chris Krok about his show Thursday night: Tonight on KROKTALK with Chris Krok on Atlanta’s News Talk 750 WSB, Chris got former Congressional page based in Atlanta, Tyson Vivyen to admit that he remained in contact with former Florida U.S. Congressman Mark Foley for eight years after being “victimized” by him as a page in 1997. He said during that time, they instant messaged 50-80 times. During the eight years, Vivyen said Foley still would send explicit IM’s.

ATLANTA Oct 5, 2006 (AP)— A former congressional page said Thursday he received sexually suggestive messages from then-Rep. Mark Foley in 1997. Tyson Vivyan's account appears to show the earliest exchange of suggestive messages reported so far between Foley and teens who had served in the Capitol page program. Previous accounts placed the earliest contacts in 2003. Vivyan, 26, told The Associated Press that Foley began sending him instant messages about a month or two after his nine-month stint as a page ended in June 1997.

One of the first Shelbyville confiscations of the African drug khat occurred early Sunday morning. "Approximately 11.26 grams of a green leafy substance believed to be khat" were found in a coat pocket of Mustaf Shire Abdi, 21, Anthony Lane, Officer Tracey Nelson said. Abdi tried to pull away as Officer Benjamin Burris was checking the pocket and was immediately handcuffed, Nelson said. "Khat use is most prevalent among immigrants from Somalia, Ethiopia and Yemen," a May 2003 National Drug Intelligence Center bulletin said. "These individuals use the drug in casual settings or as part of religious ceremonies. "The use...

It could soon be high noon in Calhoun. The town of 13,000 tucked away in the northwest corner of Georgia has been reshaped during the past decade by a huge influx of Latinos. The big draw: jobs at Mohawk Industries Inc. (MHK ), the town's largest employer. The $6.6 billion carpet maker employs 32,000 workers in all, 4,000 of them in Calhoun and surrounding Gordon County. Once staffed largely by whites, Mohawk today has a workforce made up substantially of immigrants from Mexico and other Latin American countries. An employee of Tyson Foods in Shelbyville has tested positive for tuberculosis, according to complex manager Michael Sheets. The employee has been sent home, while 64 others working in the same department have been given skin tests for the disease. The company has also been educating employees about the disease. There was no word by 4 p.m. Friday on the skin test results from the 64 others tested. According to the Merck Manual of Medical Information, Home Edition, a positive skin test for tuberculosis does not necessarily mean that the subject actually has the disease. It may only mean that...

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Former president Bill Clinton called Congress' impeachment of him an "egregious" abuse of the Constitution and challenged those who say history will judge him poorly because of his White House tryst with Monica Lewinsky. Speaking at an academic conference examining his presidency here Thursday, Clinton challenged historian Douglas Brinkley's comments in a newspaper interview that Clinton would be deemed a great president were it not for his impeachment. "I completely disagree with that," Clinton said in his speech at Hofstra University. "You can agree with that statement, but only if you think impeachment was justified. Otherwise, it...

He had been sentenced to four to five years in prison. Many argue that communism will never be possible because of "human nature". The essence of this false argument is the belief that a communist society would consist of an all-powerful central government that would tell everybody what to do--and would therefore undermine the creative initiative of individuals and the search for happiness. • This argument is based on two false assumptions: (1) It assumes that a communist society will look like the former Soviet Union, or the current China, North Korea, etc (ie: corrupt police states with a feudal-style ruling class) (2) It assumes that people will only work in...

When they aren't busy boring us with cliches, a fair portion of the world's sporting elite has spent the electronic entertainment era proving that athletic and intellectual prowess rarely swim in the same gene pool. This is no condemnation of that rather predictable disparity between physical and mental gifts. This is a celebration of that typical dichotomy. The cliched are loathed and the creative celebrated, however inane. Forget respect, compassion and humility. Quotability is the ultimate virtue, blandness the deadliest of sins. Keep your canned responses. Give us more Yogi and less yoga. New England can have Belichick. Bring on...

(The) "nuclear option," (is) a parliamentary maneuver to effectively change Senate rules so that only a simple majority is needed to end a filibuster of a judicial nominee. Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., said he has not decided whether he would invoke that option next year. Robert F. Bennett, R-Utah, the chief deputy majority whip, said such a move would occur only if Democrats filibuster a Supreme Court nomination. It's the last paragraph in the source link.

One Fight Fan Does Not Gloat over Mike Tyson’s Loss by William R Alford - Aug. 1, 2004 It is somewhat understandable for some to revel in Tyson's latest defeat, but I see it as another signpost in a tragic life. There is no question that he once promised to be the greatest fighter of all time. A lawsuit by former employees of Tyson Foods, Inc. against their employer may go ahead, the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Thursday. The four former workers are seeking damages as a result of Tyson's use of illegal aliens to depress wages. They sued the company under a provision of a 1996 law that made the intentional employment of illegal aliens for financial gain a violation of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. The RICO statute was originally passed by Congress as a tool for U.S. Federal Prosecutors in their war against organized crime. U.S. lawyers...

By Monday, 42 workers were fired for submitting falsified employment documents, said company spokeswoman Libby Lawson. She said the rest were found to have proper paperwork and were allowed to return. Two, however, decided to quit and find other employment, she said. "We were very disappointed," Lawson...

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- A federal jury awarded $1.28 billion to a group of cattlemen after finding the nation's largest beef packer, Tyson Fresh Meats Inc., had unfairly manipulated cattle prices. Attorneys for Tyson Fresh Meats said they planned to appeal. Cattlemen from across the country in 1996 sued Tyson Fresh Meats, known then as IBP Inc., claiming the company used a contract with a select few beef producers to create a captive supply of cattle. The plaintiffs said Tyson Fresh Meats relied on that supply when cattle prices were high and entered the market for cattle only when prices...
