The pioneering 'B' movie filmmaker started out in the '50s directing cheapo Horror and Science Fiction films and ended up in the ‘80s directing cheapo Horror and Science Fiction films. Along the way he discovered virtually the entire 'New Hollywood' school; Among the first to see talent in young unknowns like Jack Nicholson, Robert DeNiro, Francis Ford Coppola, and Martin Scorsese among many others. His Edgar Allan Poe adaptations of the early to mid 60s were ideological precursors of ‘Easy Rider’ and the late ‘60s counterculture films; often centering on an idealistic young man who confronts a decadent member of...

Erik Bauersfeld, who died Sunday at the age of 93, wasn't a household name. But his voice was famous — thanks to three little words delivered by a bulging-eyed, amphibious rebel commander. Admiral Ackbar was written as a bit part — a handful of lines in Return of the Jedi, most of them rather defeated. "Prepare to retreat," "we have no choice, "take evasive action, "we won't last long!"

When it comes to the feud between Republican frontrunner Donald Trump and Fox News Channel host Megyn Kelly, Hillary Clinton declared herself today to be on team Megyn Kelly. During an appearance on 'The View,' Clinton ticked off a number of people who have been personally victimized by The Donald from Mexican immigrants, to John McCain – 'who's a friend of mine,' Clinton said – to 'so many women.' 'The way he treated Megyn Kelly, who is a superb journalist. Right?' scoffed the former secretary of state. 'I just don't understand what he thinks is the role of somebody who...

The endless plotting and cruel twists in the fortunes of the characters in Game of Thrones have kept audiences glued to their screens. Yet hidden among the rush for power depicted in the fantasy series, there may be one character who has been largely overlooked. Mathematicians have discovered that Tyrion Lannister and Jon Snow are the show's most important characters, while an unlikely candidate joins them as another key player, namely Sansa Stark.

Just in case you forgot in the haze of Batman and Superman not being best friends, 20th Century Fox has released a new TV spot to remind you that Independence Day: Resurgence is coming this summer and with it, the second wave of alien invaders who nearly destroyed planet earth in the original film back in 1996. The new teaser leans heavily on the returning stars of the original film. There’s Bill Pullman’s former President Thomas Whitmore interfacing with the aliens. There’s Jeff Goldblum’s David Levinson being exactly as deadpan and snarky as you require. There’s even Brent Spiner, who...

--SNIP-- Forty years have elapsed since a washed-up minor league pitcher-turned-pool cleaner named Morris Buttermaker first pulls his convertible Cadillac (no trunk cover) into the parking lot of a Little League baseball diamond early in the morning in the movie's opening scene, pops open a can of Budweiser, pours some Jim Beam bourbon into the beer for good measure, smokes a cheap stogie (courtesy of a light from Kelly Leak), and agrees to manage the lowly Bears in the ultra competitive North Valley League, at the urging of a city councilman and much to the disgust of Roy Turner (Vic...

Another month, another superhero movie staggers to the silver screen, lurching under the weight of its own self-importance, groaning with the expectations of fans, and burdened with a nine-figure marketing budget. I am, of course, talking about Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, to give it its full, clunkingly portentous title. Can we all please grow up? Can we acknowledge that Marvel and DC have scraped right though the bottom of the barrel? Can we call time on superhero films? Films which are too dark for kids the comics were originally written for, yet too dumb for any thinking adult.
