If you only watch one heart-warming, warm-and-fuzzy, inspirational, feel-good holiday movie this season, make it this one. Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors airs at 8 p.m. today on NBC and continues the tradition established by such country-themed bio-pics as Walk the Line (Johnny Cash) and Coal Miner's Daughter (Loretta Lynn). Whereas those films took a broader perspective on the lives of their country legends, this offering concentrates on a seminal period in young Dolly's life -- her hardscrabble but loving childhood in rural Tennessee that inspired the famous hit song from which the movie takes it name. Many viewers...

The LGBT movement has achieved many notable victories this year, securing marriage equality, major attacks on conversion therapy and more. But one Christian university just demonstrated why activists and allies must not become complacent: Carson-Newman University, a private Southern Baptist college in Tennessee, is now legally allowed to ban students whose "lifestyles" are interpreted as an affront to their Christian philosophy: gay students and others included. These "strengthened" rights include not only the ability to ban gay students, but also unwed mothers, women who've had abortions and even pregnant students, according to WVLT. And Carson-Newman is hardly the only college...

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The public may never know what motivated a 24-year-old Chattanooga man to kill four Marines and a sailor in an attack on Chattanooga's U.S. Naval and Marine Reserve Center last July. Investigators have said Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez was a homegrown violent extremist but have not offered more details about what motivated the attack that began at a military recruiting center and ended when Abdulazeez was shot to death by police who followed him to the reserve center. "We're still trying to make sure we understand Abdulazeez, his motivations and associations, in a really good way," FBI Director...

As President Obama presses communities to accept Syrian refugees, his current hometown of Washington, D.C., is likely to be spared much of the pain. There are about 180 communities across the U.S. that welcome refugees, but some of the more obvious cities, including San Francisco, New York and, yes, Washington, aren't high on the list because they are just too darn expensive for the refugees. Instead, the top major cities are places such as Atlanta, San Diego, Houston, Dallas, Chicago and Boston, the State Department says. And there are a host of medium-sized cities as well: Boise, Idaho, Nashville, Tennessee,...
