The Three Stooges are one of the most famous vaudeville comedy teams of all time. The best episodes of The Three Stooges often feature slapstick bits and hilarious jokes. Some good episodes of The Three Stooges use comedy to address social and political issues. Moe Howard and Larry Fine were cornerstones of the trio and Shemp Howard, Curly Howard, Joe Besser and “Curly” Joe DeRita all had runs as the third stooge.

Following the death of Shemp Howard, Columbia continued to churn out "Three Stooges" short subjects without a replacement actor being selected. Eventually, Joe Besser was chosen to replace Shemp Howard. During the period when the studio kept filming with only Moe Howard and Larry Fein available, the method used was to combine recycled stock footage of Shemp Howard as well as the use of body doubles to cover for Shemp in a number of films. Stooge fans referred to these stand-ins (usually shot from behind with their backs to the cameras) as "the Fake Shemps." This made me think about...

Jerome Lester Horwitz (October 22, 1903 – January 18, 1952), known professionally as Curly Howard, was an American vaudevillian actor and comedian. He was best known as a member of the American  farce comedy team the Three Stooges, which also featured his elder brothers Moe and Shemp Howard and actor Larry Fine. Curly Howard was generally considered the most popular and recognizable of the Stooges. He was well known for his high-pitched voice and vocal expressions ("nyuk-nyuk-nyuk!", "woob-woob-woob!", "soitenly!" Go ahead, yuk it up. Actor Paul Giamatti has signed on to replace Sean Penn as Larry in the Farrelly brothers' new movie version of “The Three Stooges." Sean Penn is going slapstick. MGM says the double Oscar winner has signed on to play Larry in the Farrelly brothers' big-screen update of The Three Stooges. Jim Carrey was in negotiations for the role of Curly, said MGM spokesman Grey Munford. The studio first featured the Stooges in a series of shorts and features beginning in 1933. Munford would not confirm reports that Benicio Del Toro will play Moe. He said filming begins this fall on the comedy, which is expected to be released in 2010.
