I had the opportunity to sit down yesterday with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) at a campaign event in Nashville and ask him several questions. One of the questions I asked was whether Senator Cruz still supported expanding the H-1B visa program, as he has in the past. Senator Cruz indicated that he no longer does, and you can see his explanation hereTed Cruz explains why his view of H-1B visas has changed (Video)Transcript: RedState: Senator, I think the path to legalization issue has been beaten to death and I won’t go over it again. One of the things you have...

Sens. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) 97% and Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL)82%together are promoting new legislation to reform the H-1B visa program, after scores of abuses by companies including Disney, Southern California Edison and more. The bill, the American Jobs First Act of 2015, is essentially an antidote to the woes of the H-1B program. The bill, which represents a crackdown on immigration program abuses by special interests, has several components. First, it requires companies that use H-1B workers to pay such visa holders “either what an American worker who did identical or similar work made two years prior to the...

I first met Sen. Marco Rubio at a Republican fundraiser in 2014 where he was the featured speaker."Hi, my name is Mark Thies", I said. "I'm an Engineering Professor at Clemson.""Engineers!", he said. "Boy, we sure need a lot more of them, don't we!"I shook my head in wonder at his comment. Indeed, if you get your news from the mainstream media you might think there's a big shortage of students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The truth, however, is quite different. For example, Clemson's engineering enrollment has reached almost 5,300 students - an 80 percent increase since 2008! In my...

Shannon Miles will not stand trial for the murder of Harris County Deputy Darren Goforth any time soon. Prosecutors and defense attorneys agreed that Shannon Miles has been found incompetent to stand trial. Two sets of doctors, one from the state and another set hired by his defense attorneys, reached the same conclusion. Miles did not appear in court. Instead this was handled by his attorney. Miles' attorneys said they don't want him making statements that would jeopardize his case. Defense attorneys say their doctors say Miles is Pscitezopherenic and psychotic. Miles will be sent to a state hospital for...

Manchester, New Hampshire (CNN)Donald Trump estimated on Tuesday that it will cost about $8 billion to build the wall he has promised to erect on the U.S.'s southern border if elected president.Trump has vowed to force Mexico to pay for the border wall and said Tuesday on MSNBC that the hefty $8 billion price tag "is a tiny fraction of the money that we lose with Mexico" on trade."The wall is probably $8 billion, which is a tiny fraction of the money that we lose with Mexico. We lose a tremendous amount of trade deficits. We have a trade deficit...

It’s hard to look at Ted Cruz’s face. He’s a brilliant orator with a sharp legal mind. But his expression unsettles me. I know my reaction is visceral and automatic, but as a neurologist it is my business to notice things out of the ordinary and probe them. The Senator’s atypical expressions leave me uneasy. Before I say why, note how many colleagues and former associates "loathe" him. A Bush alumnus told The New York Times' Frank Bruni, “Why do people take such an instant dislike to Ted Cruz? It just saves time.†Former Senate Majority leader Bob Dole says,...

Saturday night at the GOP debate in New Hampshire belonged to the executives: the governors and the businessman.

Indeed, if Saturday is any indication of what kind of debater Donald Trump can be, then it's safe to say that it really was a mistake for him to skip the Fox News debate before the Iowa caucus. He may very have won it if he had shown this kind of strength and adeptness just days before Iowans went out to vote.

Few people will talk about this, and fewer will even want to acknowledge it, but what Donald Trump did before the debate even began shows the measure of a real man’s worth. At the beginning of the ABC debate, each of the candidates were being introduced in a specific order. The first name called to the stage was Chris Christie. The applause was loud and lingered through the time when Martha Raddatz called the second candidate Ben Carson. Dr. Carson did not hear his name called (easy to understand why when you listen to the video) and stood in the...

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today condemned a Facebook post by rock musician and gun rights activist Ted Nugent suggesting that prominent Jewish Americans are behind the advocacy for stronger gun control laws. Earlier today, Nugent shared a graphic titled “So who is really behind gun control?†on his Facebook page. The visual featured thumbnail photos of prominent Jewish Americans, including former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Senator Chuck Schumer, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Harvard professor Alan Dershowitz and several others, with each photo emblazoned with the Israeli flag. The post was accompanied by a written message from Nugent:...

2016 Iowa Caucuses Pollster Ratings The following tables list the accuracy of pollsters in the February 1, 2016 Iowa Democratic and Republican presidential caucuses using the measure of polling accuracy proposed by Martin, Traugott, and Kennedy. An accuracy measure of 0.00 indicates that the odds ratio of the survey results matches the odds ratio of the actual results (the closer the accuracy score is to 0.00, the better).

Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio are riding a wave of momentum after strong finishes in Iowa. Donald Trump maintains a double-digit lead over his Republican rivals, but Rubio has experienced the largest surge, according to an NBC News/SurveyMonkey tracking poll released Tuesday. The billionaire businessman has 35 percent support nationally among Republicans and Republican-leaning voters. Ted Cruz, who won the Iowa caucuses last week, has 20 percent support, followed by Rubio in third with 17 percent support. Ben Carson is at 7 percent, and the rest of the field is at 3 percent or less. While Trump still leads by...

The president has nominated attorney J. Mark McWatters for the bank board. However, Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), chairman of the Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, has said he's "in no hurry" to hold a hearing or a vote on the nomination. Other pending confirmations take precedence, he said. The last of the 2015 lobbying reports are in, and the top corporate spender turns out to have been the Boeing Company, at $21.9 million. Not coincidentally, the aerospace giant also outranks thousands of other firms in profiting from the subsidies doled out by the Export-Import Bank. Last year, Boeing benefitted...

The biggest problem with Rep. Paul's (R-Texas) latest comments on immigration is that they are NOT just some ad hoc thoughts tossed off carelessly at some speaking event. These are engraved in a brand new book. Until the release of the book, Liberty Defined, Dr. Paul had a mixed record in Congress and the fact that he had taken the NumbersUSA "No Amnesty" pledge at the end of his Presidential campaign in 2008. That had earned him a C-minus on our 2012 Presidential Hopefuls Immigration Stances Report Card. Not impressive, but the third best (behind Rep. Bachman with a B-minus...

The next few city council meetings in Crystal City, TX are going to be pretty quiet. On Thursday, FBI agents arrested a majority of the town's top officials, including the mayor, mayor pro tempore, city manager, and a current city council member, as well as a former council member, The Washington Post reports. FBI agents also arrested Ngoc Tri Nguyen, an alleged gambling operator, nicknamed "Mr. T." A federal indictment (PDF) accused the town officials of taking thousands of dollars in bribes, and of helping Nguyen run the illegal gambling operation. Ricardo Lopez, Crystal City's mayor, was accused of accepting...

Federal prosecutors announced Wednesday that a grand jury has indicted five men on kidnapping conspiracy charges related to a January incident involving cross-border drug trafficking and torture. Charged in the indictment, and each facing life in prison if convicted, were Crystal City residents Heriberto Macias Diaz, David Perez and William Davalos, and San Antonio residents Leroy Guerra Garcia and Mark Anthony Jiminez. The men are accused of conspiring to kidnap a Pearsall tow truck driver and taking him to Piedras Negras, where he was tortured and threatened with death, all to find the location of missing drug money, according to...

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - A U.S. judge denied for the second time a request by Texas to bar relief agencies from bringing Syrian refugees into the state, a decision that could have a bearing on the attempts of 30 other governors to block refugees from their states. U.S. District Judge David Godbey said the Republican leaders who have fought the resettlement have not shown Texas would suffer irreparable harm.

A controversial voter-turnout tactic employed by Senator Ted Cruz’s presidential campaign in Iowa is cropping up in New Hampshire, this time by way of a mysterious organization about which few public details are available. Voters in New Hampshire received envelopes in the mail this week claiming to contain “important taxpayer information,†according to Christopher Crawford, who received one of the mailers and posted pictures of it on Twitter. Mr. Crawford, who recently moved to Washington, was visiting his parents at their home in Nashua, N.H., this week when he opened an envelope addressed to him only to find a chart...
