Controversial civil rights group ISEF yesterday filed suit in federal court against Turner Broadcasting and its cable affiliate TBS to cease airing the movie A Christmas Story. For several years, TBS has showed the popular movie non-stop over a twenty-four hour period on Christmas day. “It is shocking in this day and age, given all we know about the horrors of gun ownership, that TBS can irresponsibly inundate the public with these images,” said ISEF spokesperson Martin Baumlot. “This appalling movie is a fetishization of weaponry and an attempt to instill in children the false idea that guns can be...

Skip Caray made the call when the Atlanta Braves won the World Series in 1995: "Yes! Yes! Yes! The Braves have given you a championship! Listen to this crowd!" He made the call when Sid Bream scored on Francisco Cabrera's pinch-hit to win the National League Championship Series for the Braves in 1992: "Here comes Bream! Here's the throw to the plate! He iiiiiiiisssssssss ... safe! Braves win! Braves win! Braves win! Braves win! ... Braves win!" And he made the call in the late innings of a lousy game in the lost season of 1979: "You have our permission...

End of an era for TBS, Braves, fans For three decades, Braves games have been beamed around the country on TBS. They became America's Team — but Sunday, America will watch for the last time. All across America Sunday, thousands of people like Bill DeArmond of Winfield, Kan., will say goodbye to an old friend. For three decades, they have watched the national telecasts of Braves games on TBS, turning Atlanta's baseball team into — at least for a while — "America's Team." Today, America will watch for the last time. The Braves' season finale at Houston marks the end...

Possibly taking a cue from the controversial film "Brokeback Mountain," marketers at the cable network TBS are broadcasting a promotion for this weekend's showing of two "Lord of the Rings" films that suggests characters Sam and Frodo are homosexual lovers.

Ad for Brokeback Mountain played over and over during A Christmas Story, today, Christmas Day on TBS. Sent an email to tbsinfo@turner.com. Will let you know if they respond.

Well, I double--make that TRIPLE-- dog dare you not to see this classic movie! Hardly noticed when released in 1983 (not much of a promo budget, and I think it only went out to 100 theatres) but it has gotten a cult following since then. Dreams of getting that Little Orphan Annie decoder ring ("A crummy commercial!") and of course the Red Ryder BB Gun (careful, you'll shoot your eye out with it, kid). Having your mom dress your kid brother up so heavily for a cold day that he can't put his arms down. Be careful the neighbor's dogs...

"Prison Break" looks like an abomination. I don't think criminals need further glorification -- BET and MTV are more than enough for anyone, regardless of how strong their stomach is. The ads for "Prison Break" really tinkled me off, and IMV FR is the place to talk about it. The jackasses responsible for the show should be fired and blackballed.

He's known for Yogi-isms, but Yogi Berra doesn't want to know from Yogasms. The Yankee legend has filed a $10 million lawsuit against Turner Broadcasting Systems for using his name in a "hurtful" advertisement for its "Sex and the City" reruns — an ad that "created a false image of [Berra] that is both contrary to his personality, lifestyle and character as well as abhorrent to him personally." The ad, which appeared on numerous city buses and billboards and in magazines around the world, features what the suit calls a "rather provocative" photo of "Sex" star Kim Cattrall's promiscuous "Samantha"...

Claiming that his good name has been sullied by a "Sex and the City" advertisement, baseball legend Yogi Berra has sued Turner Broadcasting System for $10 million. In the below New York State Supreme Court complaint, Berra, 79, contends that TBS improperly used his name in outdoor ads (on buses and subway kiosks) promoting the cable channel's reruns of the racy HBO show starring Sarah Jessica Parker. Noting that he is a married grandfather and a "deeply religious man who has maintained and continues to maintain a moral lifestyle,

While Ted Turner was in college, his father wrote him a letter that concluded: "I think you are rapidly becoming a jackass." Anyone who has watched the eccentric billionaire over the years might be inclined to admire Dad's prescience.... Far from self-made, Mr. Turner inherited a large billboard business when his father, with whom he had a troubled relationship, committed suicide.... He had been less lucky in 1985 when, without consulting his board, he bought MGM for $1.5 billion. He overpaid and was drowning in debt. Three months later he sold the studio back at a discount. More damaging, he...

They once called women the "fairer sex," the civilizers of men, the paragons of reticence and manners. Then along came feminism, which promised women that they, too, could be loutish, horny, greedy and profane. Today, that perspective is not just stylish, it's the toast of television. "Sex and the City" is the media-darling series on that sleazy media-darling channel HBO, which could stand for Horny, Bawdy and Obnoxious. Now that the pay-cable channel's original episodes are finished, HBO has cashed in some more by selling a slightly edited version of the show to TBS. A whole new audience that doesn't pay...

At the corner of Spring Street and 12th Street in Atlanta, TBS provided a parking lot for the anti-war protest there (on Saturday, March 20, 2004). The TBS Parking lot is across from the Turner Broadcasting System Building across the street and is owned and operated by AOL-TIME-WARNER and can only be used by AOL-TIME-WARNER employees. Did AOL-Time-Warner manufacture this anti-war protest? It was done on property that is off limits to Pro-Life demonstrations, but the anti-war protests yesterday at this location had CBS-TV Channel 46 set up on the property itself with the CBS TV truck parked on "restricted...

HOLLYWOOD -- Anyone watching Fox's new primetime sudser "The OC" would think Orange County is chock-a-block with fabulous beach houses, big cars and beautiful young people. But it's also the only county in the country that is on the verge of having to sell off its cash-strapped public broadcasting station to the highest bidder. It may not be the last. There are some 350 public service broadcast licenses scattered around the country, and it's arguable that joint operations in larger markets where there are signal and audience overlap might be a wise course for some of these perennially penny-pinched outlets....

John F. Kennedy Jr., the famous son whose life began as a fairy tale and ended as a tragedy, will be the subject of a TBS biopic to star Jacqueline Bisset and Portia de Rossi as the two key women in his life, his mother and his wife. "America's Prince: The JFK Jr. Story," from Fox TV Studios, is based on Christopher Andersen's 2000 biography "The Day John Died." Bisset will play Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, while de Rossi will portray Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. The project from FTVS' Fox TV Pictures division is in preproduction. "America's Prince" is one of two...

The cofounder of CNN has suggested that AOL Time Warner pulled the wool over the eyes of the public when it reported that its Turner Broadcasting unit is successfully roping in advertisers. On his website http://www.meandted.com/bits.htm, Reese Schonfeld notes that in reality the Turner cable networks' biggest advertiser may be AOL Time Warner itself. Turner Network Television (TNT) and TBS, he says, both showed sizable gains in 2001, with TNT up 189 percent and TBS up 16 percent. But, Schonfeld observes, "More than 30% of all the money spent on TNT and more than 34% of all the money spent...
