Former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi collapsed and died following a court session Monday. He was 67. Morsi, a senior figure in the Muslim Brotherhood, was elected as Egypt's president in June, 2012 in the wake of the Arab Spring, which compelled Hosni Mubarak to resign after decades as president. He was deposed in a military coup in July 2013 following mass protests against his rule. Following his ousted, Morsi stood trial for the shooting of protesters, espionage for foreign military organizations including Hamas and Hezbollah, and for breaking out of prison in 2011 prior to his election. He was convicted...

THE PRESIDENT: Good afternoon, everybody. There are very few moments in our lives where we have the privilege to witness history taking place. This is one of those moments. This is one of those times. The people of Egypt have spoken, their voices have been heard, and Egypt will never be the same. By stepping down, President Mubarak responded to the Egyptian people’s hunger for change. The military has served patriotically and responsibly as a caretaker to the state, and will now have to ensure a transition that is credible in the eyes of the Egyptian people. That means protecting...

The State Department is denying reports that the U.S. is calling on Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi to schedule early elections. "The reports that we have been urging early elections are inaccurate," State spokesman Jen Psake said at her briefing on Tuesday. She said the U.S. has called for Egypt to allow protests and to respect democracy, both publicly and in private, but that the U.S. had not called for early elections, The Hill reported. Psaki's statement follows a report by CNN that the U.S. had called on Morsi to hold early elections. "We are saying to him, 'Figure out a...

Mercury News reports, fearing a political-military implosion that could throw its most important Arab ally into chaos, the Obama administration has abandoned its hands-off approach, delivering pointed warnings to the three main players in the crisis, according to Mercury News: Muslim Brotherhood President Mohammed Morsi, protesters demanding his ouster and the powerful Egyptian military. U.S. officials said Tuesday they are urging Morsi to take immediate steps to address opposition grievances, says Mercury News, telling the protesters to remain peaceful and reminding the army that a coup could have consequences for the massive American military aid package...

International sanctions could trigger a popular uprising in Iran like the revolt in Egypt that toppled president Hosni Mubarak, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman predicted on Sunday. "The opposition demonstrations that took place in Iran in June 2009 will come back in even greater force," Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said in an interview with the Haaretz daily. "In my view, there's going to be an Iranian-style Tahrir revolution," he said, referring to last year's mass protests in Cairo's Tahrir Square that forced Mubarak to quit. "The young generation is sick of being held hostage and sacrificing their future," Lieberman said. "The...

CAIRO (AP) -- A mob of hundreds of men assaulted women holding a march demanding an end to sexual harassment Friday, with the attackers overwhelming the male guardians and groping and molesting several of the female marchers in Cairo's Tahrir Square. From the ferocity of the assault, some of the victims said it appeared to have been an organized attempt to drive women out of demonstrations and trample on the pro-democracy protest movement. The attack follows smaller scale assaults on women this week in Tahrir, the epicenter of the uprising that forced Hosni Mubarak to step down last year.

Her screams were not drowned out by the clamor of the crazed mob of nearly 200 men around her. An endless number of hands reached toward the woman in the red shirt in an assault scene that lasted less than 15 minutes but felt more like an hour. She was pushed by the sea of men for about a block into a side street from Tahrir Square. Many of the men were trying to break up the frenzy, but it was impossible to tell who was helping and who was assaulting. Pushed against the wall, the unknown woman's head finally...
