The racist madman who slaughtered nine people in a historic South Carolina church tried to kill himself after the massacre, according to the son of one of the victims. “He pointed the gun at his head and pulled the trigger, but it went ‘click,’ because the chamber was empty,” Kevin Singleton, whose mother, Myra Thompson, 59 was killed, told The Los Angeles Times . “His plan was never to leave that church.”
  • Suicide Rates of Female Military Veterans Called 'Staggering'

New government research shows that female military veterans commit suicide at nearly six times the rate of other women, a startling finding that experts say poses disturbing questions about the backgrounds and experiences of women who serve in the armed forces. Their suicide rate is so high that it approaches that of male veterans, a finding that surprised researchers because men generally are far more likely than women to commit suicide. "It's staggering," said Dr. Matthew Miller, an epidemiologist and suicide expert at Northeastern University who was not involved in the research. "We have to come to grips with why...

Less than two months before he died from a neurological disease, Paul Stimson threw a big party for himself — a bit like having your own funeral while you’re still alive — and invited all his friends to come and celebrate his life with him. The April event at the Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial Building drew close to 200 people, a kind of who’s who of the Sonoma County bicycling community, including former pro cyclist Levi Leip-heimer. They came to honor Stimson, an accomplished amateur rider and racer, who was dying from ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Cycling was only...

After a three-day manhunt, the South Jersey man charged with stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death was found dead Saturday, police said. Camden County prosecutors said Michael Eitel, 45, had hanged himself in the West Berlin home of a different ex-girlfriend, who "had been out of the home for her own safety." His body was found about 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Eitel had been charged with first-degree murder after Carol Bowne, 39, was found with multiple stab wounds in her Berlin Township driveway Wednesday night. She died later that night at a hospital. Bowne had an active restraining order against Eitel at...

Tear down that cross and toss it in the wood chipper because the American church is toast. So goes conventional wisdom after recent revelations from the Pew Research Center, which found that in just 7 years, the percentage of Christians in the United States dropped nearly 8 points. The news was met with uncontrolled fits of glee from liberal publications like Salon, where author Patricia Miller gloated that the benefits from the decline of Christianity would be, “huge.” No doubt the scores of natural disaster victims around the globe who have profited from all the atheist relief trucks rolling in...

A man who identifies as ex-transgender has expressed "caution" regarding former Olympic athlete Bruce Jenner's decision to change his gender identity to become "Caitlyn." Walt Heyer, author and blogger with The Federalist, stated in an interview Tuesday with CNN that while Caitlyn Jenner may feel great at present "this doesn't always last." "The surgeons can make it look like you changed genders but the fact of the matter is it's all cosmetic surgery. There's really no actual gender change," Heyer asserted during an interview with CNN's Carol Costello "I felt like I had been duped, tricked, and it wasn't really...

A 2011 study at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden produced the most illuminating results yet regarding the transgendered, evidence that should give advocates pause. The long-term study—up to 30 years—followed 324 people who had sex-reassignment surgery. The study revealed that beginning about 10 years after having the surgery, the transgendered began to experience increasing mental difficulties. Most shockingly, their suicide mortality rose almost 20-fold above the comparable nontransgender population.

22 Veterans kill themselves every day. Why? I've seen this figure in print several times. These are people who were tough enough and strong enough and brave enough and dedicated enough and smart enough to make it through Basic Training, Specialty Skills Training (AIT) and the rigors of military duty. Yet, they are killing themselves when they get back to the United States. Why? The claim is that something horrible happened to them in combat. They have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. OK. Let's for arguments sake accept that every Veteran that commits suicide was involved in one or several horrible...

A U.S. airman “with no apparent motive” walked into a Wal-Mart Supercenter in North Dakota early Tuesday and opened fire with a handgun, killing one worker and injuring a second before turning the gun on himself, police said. Grand Forks police said the shooting a few minutes after 1 a.m. may have been random, with no link yet found between Marcell Willis, 21, and either the store or the employees. Paula Cooper, a Gary native who at age 16 was the youngest death row inmate in the United States before an international outcry helped reduce her sentence, killed herself Tuesday near an Indianapolis office building. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said officers were called to the 9500 block of Angola Court, near the northwest Indianapolis-Carmel border, Tuesday morning in response to a report of a body lying near a tree. The Marion County coroner's office confirmed that Cooper, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:38 a.m. Indianapolis time from a suspected self-inflicted gunshot to the head. Cooper's death...

This week, San Francisco Magazine published an anthropological incursion by Diana Kapp into the lifestyles of the most privileged teens in the nation in order to ask: Why are the kids of Palo Alto killing themselves? A cluster of teen suicides at Palo Alto high schools in 2010 was followed this year by another four suicide victims from the wealthy and achievement-blessed Henry M. Gunn High School. Fifty-two of its 1,900 students were treated for suicide ideation this past school year. By Kapp’s account, the suicidal cases are only the tip of a very large iceberg of kids who,...

And there are horrific reports about the fate of the brave women who resist the murderous terrorists - including one victim who was burned alive for refusing to perform “extreme sexual acts”. The video shows a tiny, dark figure leaning off the side of Idaho’s Perrine Bridge. The sky above is gray, the Snake River rumbles 500 feet below. The figure, 73-year-old base jumper James E. Hickey, leaps from the bridge and his parachute bursts into flame. “What the hell?” a spectator behind the camera says, half shocked, half chuckling. “We gotta —” But as distant fireball plummets toward the river below, it’s clear that something isn’t right. The laughter dies.

Potatoes aren’t the only thing growing in Idaho, as its Muslim population continues to rise following the Obama administration’s program calling for thousands of Islamic refugees to relocate to cities across the Gem State.Fearing the outcome of Idaho becoming the next major haven and breeding ground for home-grown terrorists — similar to Minnesota (see OneNewsNow story “Obama orders America to ‘welcome’ millions of illegals, migrants”), criticism has fallen on Democratic Boise Mayor David H. Bieter, who is welcoming them all with open arms — despite the known security risks. “Diversity isn't a buzz word,” Bieter declared. “It's our birthright.”

May 4, 2015 (ThePublicDiscourse.com) -- Bruce Jenner and Diane Sawyer could benefit from a history lesson. I know, because I suffered through “sex change” surgery and lived as a woman for eight years. The surgery fixed nothing—it only masked and exacerbated deeper psychological problems. The beginnings of the transgender movement have gotten lost today in the push for transgender rights, acceptance, and tolerance. If more people were aware of the dark and troubled history of sex-reassignment surgery, perhaps we wouldn’t be so quick to push people toward it.The setting for the first transgender surgeries (mostly male-to-female) was in university-based clinics, starting in the...
