The California Assembly and Senate recently unanimously approved Assembly Bill 1176 to help the port of San Francisco with financing issues. But Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) has decided to veto the legislation, sending a letter to the state Assembly chastising them for focusing on “unnecessary bills.” The San Francisco Bay Guardian also notes a second, more direct, message hidden in Schwarzenegger’s missive — contained in the first letter of each line:

Why are California and the United States on the brink of fiscal ruin? ALBANY — Nancy Calhoun has been in the state Assembly six years longer than Kevin Cahill, but seniority only gets you so far in Albany when it comes to dividing up pork-barrel money. Calhoun, a Republican, has $133,000 to distribute in her parts of Orange and Rockland counties while Cahill, who belongs to the Democratic majority, will spend nearly four times that amount — $525,000 — in his mostly Ulster County district. Nearly half the state Assembly is switching to hybrids as their choice for state-leased vehicles, a marked change from the gas-guzzling sport utility vehicles and luxury sedans that have long been favored by lawmakers. Thirty-nine of the 80 Assemblymembers now are driving hybrids, up from 27 last year. Of the 40 senators, 13 opted for hybrids, three more than last year. State lawmakers choose their official vehicles, which are subsidized by taxpayers. SACRAMENTO (AP) - An aide to a California assemblywoman who claimed her boss discussed intimate details of her sex life and solicited comments about her low-cut clothing has received a $118,000 settlement from the state. Erika Weaver-Taylor, 37, of San Jose, received the money after making the charges last year against Assemblywoman Rebecca Cohn, D-Saratoga, according to documents released Friday. Cohn called the settlement by the Assembly Rules Committee ridiculous and said she "wouldn't have given a dime" to her former spokeswoman. <p>Unless they all sit down and settle this thing soon, a case will go to trial Monday that pits a 41-year-old Sacramento woman against the state of California. On the surface, the case of Pamela "P.J." Harper vs. the California State Assembly is a discrimination lawsuit brought by the former director of the Legislative Travel Office, who says she was squeezed out of her $75,348-a-year job after returning to work from a 5 1/2 -month maternity leave.</p>

<p>Assembly Democrats on Monday began laying the groundwork to attempt to force a reluctant Gov. Gray Davis to raise vehicle license fees.</p> <p>In two votes that divided along party lines, the Democratic-controlled Assembly Budget Committee tied $8.6 billion in spending cuts sought by Davis to a plan he opposes that would add $4 billion to local government coffers by raising the fees car owners pay.</p>
