The first couple of years of the Korean War can easily be described as a seesaw strategic battle for control of the peninsula. However, the same was very much true at the tactical level where control for every field, hill, and ridge would often see a back and forth game of attack and counter-attack. Often changing hands multiple times in one evening, these strategic points became the center of intense fighting. For Herbert K. Pililaau, this would result in him being the last man standing on hill 931 of Heartbreak Ridge as he covered the retreat for the rest of...

Perhaps the Oakland Raiders have figured out their new stadium situation after all. The plan for the Raiders to move to Las Vegas seemed to be in danger once casino mogul Sheldon Adelson walked back his $650 million pledge. But Vincent Bonsignore of the Los Angeles Daily News said that the Raiders informed the NFL that Bank of America will complete the financing for the stadium plan. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network confirmed that report.

ATLANTA (AP) -- Atlanta United said Monday it is "taking measures internally" to address an anti-gay chant used by some fans attending the team's first Major League Soccer match. United spokesman Chris Winkler said the team was aware of the chant during Sunday night's 2-1 loss to the New York Red Bulls. In a statement to The Associated Press, the team said the chants "have no place in our matches" and fans participating in those chants will be removed from games.

For Daniel Barbarisi, fantasy is reality. In December 2015, he quit his job as the Yankees beat reporter for the Wall Street Journal to play fantasy sports, embed himself in that world and tell its story. In the process, during 2016, he earned $100,000 — $30,000 more than he made at his writing job. “People now think my decision to do it is the greatest thing ever,” said the 37-year-old, who lives in Boston. “At the beginning, though? They thought I was insane.”

A seven-year-old Newfoundland boy and his bowling team will receive gold medals after they were stripped of a title because they wore the wrong pants. Todd Powell went public with his anger over his son Grayson’s disqualification from a provincial tournament in St. John’s over the weekend. He says he was told before the competition that black pants were required, but on short notice he was only able to find a pair of faded black jeans for the boy. Powell says the kids were on the lanes waiting for their medals when he was informed that the team had been...

At 98 years young, Tao Porchon-Lynch exemplifies her mantra, “There is nothing you cannot do.” Declared by the Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest living yoga instructor in 2012, she was recently named the face of Athleta’s “Power of She” campaign. "I know I'm 98, but honestly, I don't feel it," Tao says. Her story plays out like a journey through 20th Century history, and is told in her autobiography, “Dancing Light: The Spiritual Side of Being Through the Eyes of a Modern Yoga Master.” Tao marched with Mahatma Gandhi as a young woman. "I didn't know who he...

Here's a piece of advice for crooks: If you're going to break into someone's house, know whose house you're breaking into. Lee County deputies said Josue Ortiz picked the wrong house, which he found out when the homeowner beat him using his Jiu-Jitsu skills. Brian Burch said he was just trying to protect his stuff from a brazen thief. "I was holding him down," Burch said. "Once I had him, he wasn't going anywhere." Burch is skilled in the martial art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. "I wrestled before. I've trained for the last two and a half years." On Tuesday, when...
  • Bob Miller to retire as Kings' play-by-play announcer

Kings broadcaster Bob Miller has relinquished his microphone, a reluctant decision but one that was strongly recommended by his doctors to safeguard his health after he underwent quadruple bypass surgery early in 2016, suffered a mini-stroke three months later, and had another stroke in January. Miller, 78, was in his 44th season calling Kings games. He had cut back his schedule drastically and eliminated travel to games outside Pacific Division cities, but even that reduced workload proved too much.
  • Report: Teams told Kaepernick they wouldn’t sign him if he continued protest

There now seems to be some method to all the madness. Mere hours after it was reported San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick would not protest the national anthem next season, comes this rather interesting tidbit from Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole. This seems to make some sense from a business standpoint. If Kaepernick himself is looking to latch on with another team in free agency, being divisive isn’t necessarily the way to do it.

Philadelphia ruled out Joel Embiid for the season with a knee injury on Wednesday, and in the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t matter much. The Sixers are 22-38, 6½ games out of the last playoff spot and just traded away a key rotation player. Embiid’s surgically repaired foot is fine, and Philly will benefit more from adding lottery ping-pong balls than a few extra wins. Embiid will be back, a true franchise player joining a likely franchise player (Ben Simmons) and the now probable Rookie of the Year, Dario Saric, in an absurdly talented young frontcourt. The 76ers will...

Just in time to go get his next NFL contract, Colin Kaepernick's national anthem protest is done. On Thursday morning, according to ESPN, Kaepernick, who spent all of last season kneeling during the national anthem in a polarizing and impactful protest of police brutality and minority oppression, is suddenly done kneeling. "Kaepernick no longer wants the past method of protest to detract from the positive change that he believes has been created, per sources," ESPN's Adam Schefter wrote.
  • Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game (55 years ago today)

    03/02/2017 10:06:50 AM PST · by EveningStar · 25 replies
Wilt Chamberlain set the single-game scoring record in the National Basketball Association (NBA) by scoring 100 points for the Philadelphia Warriors in a 169–147 win over the New York Knicks on March 2, 1962, at Hershey Sports Arena in Hershey, Pennsylvania. It is widely considered one of the greatest records in basketball. Chamberlain set five other league records that game including most free throws made, a notable achievement, as he was regarded as a poor free throw shooter. The teams broke the record for most combined points in a game (316). That season, Chamberlain averaged a record 50.4 points per...

Colin Kaepernick hired new agents, which was reported this week. The agents told teams Kaepernick would be opting out of his San Francisco 49ers contract to become a free agent, news that broke Wednesday. On Thursday, ESPN reported that Kaepernick would stand for the national anthem in 2017. All of these things are related, of course.

Remember the report from early February that said Washington was not letting GM Scot McCloughan speak with the media? Apparently that was only the tip of the iceberg. The Washington Post’s Mike Jones reported on Wednesday that McCloughan is not at the NFL Combine, which seems curious considering it is the biggest scouting event of the season. When asked about McCloughan’s absence, the team said it was due to family matters, while McCloughan said it was because of a death in the family.
