Competitive high school ice fishing. Who woulda thought? In Wisconsin, it's a growing sport, complete with rankings, trophies, a state tournament, cheers and, yep, team uniforms. Not officially sanctioned as a varsity sport, the activity is growing in popularity in western Wisconsin four years after starting up as a way for teams to square off against schools in eastern Wisconsin during the statewide championship planned for Saturday on Lake Winnebago. The championship will be the eighth and final event of the season for the state circuit, which remains loosely affiliated under the unofficial direction of activities directors and coaches, some...

The NFL's competition committee is expected to enact a rule at their March owners meeting that would penalize players fifteen yards if they use the n-word on the field. John Wooten, the head of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, which monitors diversity in the league, told ESPN that he thinks the automatic fifteen-yard penalty should apply to first-time offenders, while second infractions should be punished with ejection. "I will be totally shocked if the competition committee does not uphold us on what we're trying to do," Wooten said. "We want this word to be policed from the parking lot to the...

...The tournament has been expanded from 16 to 24 teams for this edition, a political move by UEFA president Michel Platini that will arguably only dilute the quality and excitement. ...There was an awkward chuckle or two when Gibraltar and Armenia were drawn with the very teams they have refused to play against. Having broken away from Spain politically, it was pre-arranged that if drawn together, Gibraltar would be moved to another group. And as misfortune would have it, Gibraltar was indeed drawn into Spain’s Group C with Spain. So instead, it was dropped into Group D with Germany with...

You might well think that the catastrophic destruction of firearms caused by shooters leaving their cleaning rods inside their guns was a rare occurrence, but you would be wrong. It happens far to often. These photos show what happens when a cleaning rod is left in a .338 Lapua Magnum rifle. A member of the SnipersHide forum reported that this KABOOM happened two benches down from him at the range. The shooter only sustained minor injuries. Two holes were punched in roof and pieces of the rifle were scattered around the range.

Sen. Mark Begich of Alaska is the lead sponsor of Senate Bill 1865, which would raise the price of the federal duck stamp to $25. At its current price, the buying power of the federal duck stamp, which is required by the U.S. government to hunt migratory waterfowl, has never been lower over its 79-year history, according to a news release from Ducks Unlimited. Since the federal duck stamp’s enactment in 1934, the price has only been raised seven times. It has been 23 years since the last increase to bring the price of the stamp to $15, the single...

The head of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, which monitors diversity in the NFL, expects the league to institute a rule where players would be penalized 15 yards for using the N-word on the field. John Wooten, the head of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, anticipates that the NFL's competition committee will enact the rule at the owners' meeting next month. "We did talk about it, I'm sure that you saw near the end of the year that Fritz Pollard (Alliance) came out very strong with the message that the league needs to do something about the language on the field," said...

SOCHI, Russia -- Teemu Selanne led his team around the ice, with a bronze medal draped around his neck, after he finished off his sixth Olympics with a sweet victory. If the Finnish Flash is retiring and hanging up his skates after the NHL season, he picked a pretty good way to go out on the world's stage. The final game at the Olympics turned out well for Finland's Teemu Selanne, who will go out on a high note, writes Pierre LeBrun. Story Selanne scored two goals and Tuukka Rask had a 27-save shutout, helping Finland rout the United States...

Jonathan Quick will leave Sochi empty handed, but not quietly. Humiliated after a 5-0 loss to Finland in the Olympic bronze-medal hockey game Saturday, the U.S. goaltender harshly criticized his team’s effort a day after losing to Canada in the semifinals. “It shouldn’t be too hard,” he told NBC. “We do that all year long. We’re professionals. We play back-to-backs all year long. “There’s no reason we show up and not piss a drop.” Quick also took responsibility for his own play. “My job is to stop the puck, and I didn’t do that very well,” the Los Angeles Kings...
  • Olympic win over U.S. cements the fact Canada is a hockey factory

Sometimes, we forget what Canada really is, when it comes to hockey. We worry, we agonize, we fret. We wonder if the Americans will catch us, if the Swedes or the Finns will topple us, what the Russians have left. And sometimes we lose. It happens. It’s hockey. But this country is a factory from coast to coast, an incubator and a gladiator academy, pumping out players who not only are big and fast and strong and skilled, so skilled, but actors who learn how to play the harder parts, too. We produce stars who can play like they have...

OTTAWA - The U.S. president now owes Prime Minister Stephen Harper two cases of beer — Samuel Adams brand, specifically. The friendly bet was made earlier in the week in Mexico, where the two leaders met for the North American Leaders' Summit. After the Canadian women's Olympic hockey team came back to tie their Yankee rivals in the last minute of the game and win the gold in overtime, Harper announced via Twitter he was looking forward to his case of beer from Barack Obama. After the Canadian men's Olympic team defeated their American rivals Friday in a 1-0 shutout,...

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Parker Kligerman burst into the Daytona media room, arms outstretched and unleashed a “Woo hoo!” One day after flipping his car for the first time in his career, the 23-year-old Kligerman had reason to flip out — he was racing in the Daytona 500. Kligerman had to sweat out his spot Thursday night after failing to earn a berth on speed in the first qualifying race, and watched the second race in his motorhome. He compared the stress on Twitter to preparing for fatherhood, then said it was more like watching election results come in...

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Miami Heat might have been victorious on Thursday night but it didn't leave Oklahoma City without a few bumps and bruises. The Heat announced on Friday afternoon that LeBron James suffered a broken nose in his fourth-quarter collision with Serge Ibaka in the Heat's 103-81 victory against the Thunder. When James was driving to the basket for what would result in a dunk, Ibaka hit him in the face while attempting to get into defensive position.

SOCHI, Russia — Ashley Wagner launched a withering attack on figure skating's hierarchy and the Winter Olympics judges on Thursday night after being pushed down to seventh in the ladies' individual competition. The 22-year-old American fought back tears as she revealed her frustration and anger with the judging at the Iceberg Skating Palace and suggested that the two Russian skaters, gold medalist Adelina Sotnikova and fifth-place finisher Julia Lipnitskaia, had been given unfairly inflated scores. "I feel gypped," said Wagner, who skated two programs without any falls and punched the air with delight at the end of her free skate.
