2004 gave us songs about the Iraqi war, milkshakes, and, uh, apologizing to a girlfriend about having a baby with another woman. Before it all fades from memory, we want to know how you'd rate the words you heard buzzing through your head as you were driving through traffic, walking with your iPod, or zoning out in front of MTV. We've gathered a sampling of notable lyrics from 20 songs that were released or on the charts during the past year, covering a range from pop to country and hip-hop, from superstars like Usher and Kanye West to critical faves...

One December a few years back, I was in Santa Claus, Indiana, and went to the Post Office - a popular destination thanks to its seasonal postmark. "Merry Christmas!" I said provocatively. But Postmistress Sandy Colyon was ready for me. "A week ago," she said, "I'd have had to say 'Happy Holidays', but we've been given a special dispensation from the Postmaster-General allowing us to say 'Merry Christmas'. So Merry Christmas!" That's "Christmas" at the dawn of the third millennium - a word you have to get a special memo from head office authorising the use thereof. In America, most...

The first battle was joined about a week ago. My unit’s enemies had been enjoying many victories (all against the weak and defenseless) on battlefields outside of my area of operations when they finally showed up in a place my growling troops could get at them. I quickly consulted my small-unit leaders, analyzed the intelligence I was being provided with, called the enemy to let them know they were about to get whomped (I like to fight fair and have found that telling the enemy they are about to get their asses handed to them has a way of rattling...

When Bush was on the campaign trail, he had a couple of great songs that I have since downloaded. I am looking for some other songs that would get my heart thumping. Can you suggest some songs? (I am rather new to country music.) Please help. Thanks! This is what I have so far: "Where the Stars & Stripes and the Eagles Fly" by Aaron Tippin (from Bush Campaign Trail) "Only in America" by Brooks and Dunn (from Bush Campaign Trail) "Live What I Believe" by Russ Lee & President Bush "Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue" by Toby...

WASHINGTON — The song that defines Halloween for many — “Monster Mash” — is being brought back to life today with the help of the original recording artist. The new song — “Monster Slash” — was recorded by Bobby “Boris” Pickett, the co-creator of the 1962 hit “Monster Mash” and also the vocalist on the original recording. “Our goal here is to make sure that people understand that the scariest thing to happen to our forests in a long time,” said CPAL Director Peter Altman, “is the Bush administration’s plan to surrender vast quantities of virgin wilderness areas to the...

Given what I had written about them, I had no right to expect my lunch companions to be friendly. But apart from one fraught moment (of which more later), the spokesmen for the international music industry were perfectly amicable. I had written several columns and editorials arguing that the internet had deprived the record companies of their purpose, that the bullying of teenagers who downloaded free music smacked of desperation and that the industry's only hope of survival was finding a new business model. Determined to convince me that I was wrong were Jay Berman, chairman of the International Federation...

"This Land Is Your Land," of course. "Hard Travelin'," certainly. But "Honeyky Hanukkah"? "Hanukkah Tree"? There seems to be no end to the surprises dug up by Woody Guthrie's daughter and tireless archivist, Nora Guthrie. Five years ago she gathered rock stars to write music for some of Guthrie's thousands of unpublished lyrics, touching on decidedly non-Dust Bowl topics like U.F.O.'s, Joe DiMaggio and Ingrid Bergman. Now Ms. Guthrie has hit another jackpot. After further searches in the Woody Guthrie Archives on West 57th Street in Manhattan, where she is the executive director, Ms. Guthrie has found a series of...

ALBANY, N.Y. - Unexpected and insidious, the earworm slinks its way into the brain and refuses to leave. Symptoms vary, although high levels of annoyance and frustration are common. There are numerous potential treatments, but no cure. "Earworm" is the term coined by University of Cincinnati marketing professor James Kellaris for the usually unwelcome songs that get stuck in people's heads. Since beginning his research in 2000, Kellaris has heard from people all over the world requesting help, sharing anecdotes and offering solutions. "I quickly learned that virtually everybody experiences earworms at one time or another," he said. "I think...

US recording industry investigators say they have begun asking suspected internet song-swappers to settle copyright-infringement charges before taking them to court. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), which is waging a legal campaign against Internet users who copy its songs online, said it had contacted some 204 suspected infringers with settlement offers last week. The trade group has sued hundreds of suspected song-swappers since September in an effort to discourage the rampant online copying it believes has cut into CD sales. Among those charged have been a 12-year-old girl and a 71-year-old grandfather, leading some lawmakers and consumer advocates...

It's become a familiar rite of spring and summer around the country: city residents converging on a grassy park hillside, spreading out a blanket and enjoying a free concert.

THIRTY-NINE pages of song lyrics by Lorenz Hart- almost all in the celebrated lyricist's own hand - have been discovered in a vault at the J.P. Morgan Chase Bank.

Most of the lyrics are of songs from shows Hart wrote with Richard Rodgers in the '20s. However, it also includes lyrics for songs for which the music was either lost or never written.

I do not know why Senate Republicans are so responsive to Hollywood, and the recording/publishing industry. First we got term extension, adding 20 years to an already more than adequate term. (Upheld by the Supreme Court in the Eldred case.)Then we endured the Uruguay agreement where most foreign works published in the U.S. were put back under copyright protection. Then we were blessed with the La Cienega provision, which assured that all songs first published as recordings remained protected and were extended to benefit the publishing industry. Now Senator Hatch has announced his stupid "hack the copyright bandits" proposal. (I...

I think Chris Ledoux said it best with his song "I Believe in America." This song shows the conservative roots of country music. His song is still patriotic today even though it was written in the 80's(right after Carter's disastrous administration). If you like the lyrics, then try to download it online or get some of his music. He has many albums. His three volume set titled "Chris Ledoux: American Cowboy" has it. Eat your heart out, Dixie Chicks! I Believe In America This country's seen some hard times, lord knows she's deep in debt. She's comin' through another depression...

Posted Mar. 06, 2003 Eric Klister column: Look for musicians to turn up volume on anti-war stanceThe bombs are about to fall, troops are set to be deployed and tanks are ready to roll, or so it appears. I wonder what Bruce Springsteen and Madonna are thinking. As sure as it appears that a war with Iraq is imminent, you also can bet that musicians are ready to launch their own attack in the form of protest songs, speeches and advertisements. Curiously, the music industry so far has turned down the volume on anti-war sentiments. At this year’s Grammys, hardly...

Country artist Darryl Worley is first out of the gate with a record that endorses war with Iraq. The top new song on this week's country chart at No. 43, Have You Forgotten? may seem to equate Saddam Hussein with Osama bin Laden, but the record is striking a chord.

Song Stuck in Your Head? You're Not AloneBy Alison McCookNEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The vast majority of people say they have been mentally tortured at one point in their lives by a song that keeps repeating itself over and over in their heads. And new research shows that people most frequently plagued by this phenomenon are those with slightly neurotic tendencies , and people who enjoy and listen to music often. These mental broken records are also more likely to play the first or last song we hear in different situations, such as the first song that comes on...

WASHINGTON (Variety) - Handing the entertainment business an enormous win Wednesday, the U.S. Supreme Court (news - web sites) upheld a 1998 law giving Hollywood nearly a century before having to release copyrighted pictures into the public domain and lose exclusive rights to sell coveted classics. In a 7-2 ruling worth billions to showbiz, the justices said Capitol Hill was perfectly within its rights when it extended the life of copyrighted works by two decades, from 75 to 95 years. Industryites say the ruling provides an important investment incentive, both for future projects and for hundreds of existing works. With...

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld longstanding copyrights designed to protect the profits of songs, books and cartoon characters, a huge victory for Disney and other companies. The 7-2 ruling, while not unexpected, was a blow to Internet publishers and others who wanted to make old books available online and use the likenesses of a Mickey Mouse cartoon and other old creations without paying high royalties. Hundreds of thousands of books, movies and songs were close to being released into the public domain when Congress extended the copyright by 20 years in 1998. Justices said the copyright extension,...

Molly Malone 'Twas in old Atlanta, where Pop was a cantor, Our picket lines clashed, and I met my true love. My avid insistence met massive resistance, crying: "Rockets and missiles!.
