For many, the end of the world might seem daunting, but for these festival goers a post-apocalyptic world in the middle of a Californian desert is a form of escapism. At least this is the case for Mike Orr who is known as 'Sweet Lips' at Wasteland Weekend - the annual four-day festival that allows lovers of the Mad Max movie franchise to see what it is really like to live in a society where civilization is crumbling. 'It's the end of the world,' Orr said of Wasteland which attracts thousands from across the country. 'You get to do whatever...

It was inevitable, from the moment video cameras went up over Pittsburgh area bald eagle nests, that viewers would eventually see something disturbing. On Tuesday, eagles at the nest site in the Hays neighborhood brought a young cat into the nest to feed their two eaglets. "After reviewing the footage, we believe the cat was dead when it was brought to the nest," said Rachel Handel, spokeswoman for the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania. "We don't know if it was a pet or feral. It's impossible to know if the cat was killed by the eagle or was a roadkill,...

You probably know the Visigoths as the Germanic tribes who invaded the Roman Empire. You're wrong. The Visigoths did not "invade" the Roman Empire. They were legal immigrants, who simply never fully assimilated into Roman law. The Visigoths lived in Dacia, the region beyond the Northern frontier of the Roman Empire, north of Greece and what is now Bulgaria. Invasions from Huns led Goth leader Fritigern to appeal to Roman Emperor Valens to immigrate to Rome. Valens perceived of them as potentially productive workers and even soldiers. The Visigoths soon became impoverished, and began selling their women for food and...

Donald Trump, the orange spray-tanned Republican presidential candidate, kicked off his California primary campaign yesterday at the Orange County Fairgrounds. Costa Mesa's Pacific Amphitheater seemed like the perfect venue in a county that's right-wing as hell, no? The city, no stranger to anti-immigrant policy at the local level, had to be a good fit for Trump's "build that wall," Mexi-hating mantra, right? Wrong! Waves of protests rolled out the unwelcome mat for the Donald blocking freeway entrances, taking over an intersection, vandalizing property all while bumping YG and Nipsey Hussle's "FDT (F### Donald Trump)" throughout the day. At the onset,...

Three years ago, Dr. Keith Smith, co-founder and managing partner of the Surgery Center of Oklahoma, took an initiative that would only be considered radical in the health care industry: He posted online a list of prices for 112 common surgical procedures. The 51-year-old Smith, a self-described libertarian, and his business partner, Dr. Steve Lantier, founded the Surgery Center 15 years ago, after they became disillusioned with the way patients were treated at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City, where the two men worked as anesthesiologists. In 1997, Smith and Lantier bought the shell of a former surgical center with...

Tariffs as a source of federal government Revenue So there seem to be some conservatives that are scoffing at Trump talking about tariffs as part of reinvigorating domestic US Industries ... protecting them.... Yet tariffs are probably one of the most back to the founders concept that any candidate is talking about Look at the graph and then read the Wiki page you'll see that tariffs on Imports was the prime source of income for the federal government before the federal income tax system When America was young and weak, tariffs were the founding fathers tool to promote growth of...

Published on Sep 25, 2015Today after waiting 2 1/2 years she FINALLY got her estrogen. I picked it up while she was in school so she had no idea. Core Media Group, the company behind "American Idol" and "So You Think You Can Dance," has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in New York. According to court papers, the company says it owes $398 million. That includes money owed for loans, back payments to former employees, and investors, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "American Idol" was the company's biggest breadwinner. And now that the show has ended at Fox, the company is unable to find a similar source of revenue. The company has been seeing losses from a decline in "American Idol" ratings for several years now, however. In 2014,...

>High home prices are pushing three groups of people out of big, expensive cities: low-income workers, people in rural-based industries, and millennials. Trulia data scientist Mark Uh examined how the affordability crisis is pricing out various income groups.Using data from the 2014 five-year US Census American Community Survey, Uh looked into migration patterns away from the biggest — and often most expensive — cities. He wrote in a post Thursday, "Millennials accounted for the largest share of out migration [by age group] at 51.1%, and they also had the highest move-away rate relative to expectation at +105.6%."Although Millennials moved out at...

[Snip] Two weeks ago, the North American Law Center warned Ted Cruz to step out of the presidential primary race or they would be forced to release damaging information on his citizenship status. He didn’t, so late yesterday, they did. Fortunately, it is not a lengthy analysis, nor is it complex. The only two official documents that Senator Cruz has not sealed – that is hidden from public view – are: 1. His Canadian Birth Certificate Here is the actual document. This shows he in a natural born citizen of Canada, born on Dec. 22, 1970. 2. His Renunciation of...

The NCAA Board of Governors on Wednesday took steps to protect participants and spectators from discrimination at NCAA events. At its quarterly meeting in Indianapolis, the board adopted a new requirement for sites hosting or bidding on NCAA events in all divisions — from the Men’s and Women’s Final Fours to educational events such as leadership development conferences — to demonstrate how they will provide an environment that is safe, healthy, and free of discrimination, plus safeguards the dignity of everyone involved in the event.

The University of Washington removed an infographic Tuesday that gave prospective cheerleaders tips on how to do their hair and makeup for tryouts after strong social media backlash. The graphic advised women to wear their hair “straight or curled” along with “false eyelashes” and “flattering eye shadow.” It discouraged women from wearing “distracting fingernail polish” or “tops that cover the midriff.” The Seattle Times reported the advice along with a photo of a white woman in blond hair posing in a black sports bra was posted on the cheerleading team’s Facebook page. The post was removed before 9 a.m. Tuesday.

SANTA ANA – A woman whose badly burned body was found abandoned in an Irvine parking lot nearly seven years ago has never been identified – but the trial for a Santa Ana man accused of strangling her and setting her aflame began Wednesday. Zenaido Baldivia-Guzman, 30, is one of two brothers accused of murdering the woman after kidnapping her from the streets of Santa Ana on Sept. 4, 2009, and leaving her body to be discovered the next morning in an industrial park near Alton Parkway. With no identification of the body and no witnesses, Irvine investigators were initially...

The NCAA has created an anti-discrimination process for championship bids, including cities that want to host the Final Four, the association announced Wednesday. The NCAA Board of Governors adopted a new requirement for sites bidding on championship events to demonstrate “how they will provide an environment that is safe, healthy and free of discrimination, plus safeguards the dignity of everyone involved in the event,” according to an NCAA news release. The requirement comes as legislatures in many states have passed religious freedom laws that allow residents to refuse to provide certain services based on people's sexual orientation or gender identity.

A curious poll out of Harvard was published on Monday showing that 51% of people between 18 and 29 do not support capitalism. But the curious aspect of this poll is that only 33% of respondents supported socialism. The dichotomy suggests that either most young people haven't a clue about the differernce between capitalism and socialism or, as the researchers believe, the opposition to capitalism arises out of anger at the status quo. Washington Post: The Harvard University survey, which polled young adults between ages 18 and 29, found that 51 percent of respondents do not support capitalism. Just 42...

The "golden age" of stock market returns is over. That's the summary of a big piece of research from the McKinsey Global Institute (MGI), which estimated returns over the next 20 years in US and Western European markets under two scenarios. The first assumes that today's slow-growth environment remains, while the second models faster growth as technology improves. It concluded that in neither case would returns match those of the past 30 years. For US and European stocks, the difference between past and future annual returns could range from 1.5 percentage points to 4 percentage points. The gap for fixed-income could be...

Since both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sander are quite keen to talk about climate change and carbon taxes, let’s take a brief break from the campaign trail and check in on how Mother Gaia is doing these days. We’ve recorded what some climate scientists claim is a string of record warmest months over the past year and if I were judging by the almost snow-free, mild winter we just enjoyed in upstate New York and the rest of the northeast (watch out for the bears) I’d have to agree. So I assume this means we’re all doomed. But oddly...

Donald Trump swept through all five Northeastern and mid-Atlantic voting states on Tuesday, in a show of dominance unprecedented in his campaign for president. The Manhattan billionaire and GOP frontrunner won every single county in play — 107 total among Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Delaware, Maryland, and Connecticut. As a result, he won each of the 34 congressional districts in play. The East-Coast romp led to Trump pick up at least 110 delegates — more than 93% of the total in play. That total shattered even the rosiest projections of a successful night for Trump. MSNBC's Steve Kornacki projected that Trump...
