The winter sunlight barely touches the depths of the abandoned store, where wires dangle from the ceiling, wood shavings scatter the floor, a King Lear shelf marker lies on the stairs, and a Led Zeppelin poster hangs spurned in a rack. The standalone building in Danbury, Connecticut, still bears the name of the Borders book chain that collapsed in 2011, and strewn on its cash register are fire-sale price lists for its fixtures and fittings. But nobody wanted them either. Instead its 8ft book cases stand bare and upright in the gloom, like the ruins of a bygone age. In...

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Russian authorities said they have detained about 300 people suspected of fostering terrorism. A special operation Friday by authorities in St. Petersburg rounded up the group, RIA Novosti said Saturday. Among those captured were people from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Egypt and Afghanistan. "Ten of the detained people had forged documents, 20 had no documents at all and six were previously subjected to deportation from Russia," a police statement said.

On 9 February, 2013, the Santa Fe Police Department collected 224 guns turned in to it for Visa gift cards. The cards were worth $150 for handguns, $100 for long guns, and $200 for "high capacity or assault" weapons. The police scared off a number of people who wished to offer more money than the police would give in prepaid visa cards. What legal authority the police had to do this is unknown. Another gun turn in will be held on the ninth of March. Dean Weingarten

I am a certified firearms instructor who has taught CCW classes in Arizona since the beginning of the CCW program there in 1994. As we are on the border with California, I watch the developments there with some interest. Unfortunately, nearly everything that I have read and heard about the LAPD and guns has lead me to distrust them. I had numerous students who had dealings with the LAPD. I started hearing stories about how guns were seized, even if there were no crime involved. If an officer came across a gun, it was seized, and it would not be...

Nice job, LAPD… rapid and promiscuous FAIL! nquiring minds would certainly like to see the video from the squad car involved where two LA Police officers rapidly and promiscuously opened fire on a pickup truck, thinking they had the far left-wing murderer Christopher Dorner in their sights. If you or I had opened fire on a pickup truck whose occupants weren’t trying to run us over or shooting at us, we’d be in jail for a long time to come. While police have a little additional leeway in using deadly force, it would seem this was a grossly inappropriate use...

Pro-Constitution and Second Amendment Rally at Arizona Capitol, 8 February, 2013 I attended the Rally on 8 February at the Arizona Capitol that was aimed at protecting the Constitution, especially the Second Amendment. I and my brother arrived about half an hour early and were able to find parking. For the last decade, some social scientists have been arguing that “happiness measurements” should replace or supplement established economic standards to judge a society’s “success.” Many environmentalists also support the idea as a way of putting lipstick on policies that could slow down economic growth. And now, the idea is deemed ready to leave the ivory tower for implementation as government policy. One can understand the appeal for the ruling elite and their camp followers of consultants and lobbyists. If government assumes the power to promote happiness, officials would have to “consult with experts” to figure out criteria by which...

We live in an age of falsity, in which words have lost their meanings and concepts are reinvented as the situation demands. The United States is in a jobless recovery — even if that phrase largely disappeared from the American lexicon about 2004. Good news somehow must follow from a rising unemployment rate, which itself underrepresents the actual percentage of Americans long out of work. At the same time, we are supposed to be relieved that we are in a contracting expansion, where fewer goods and services are proof of a resilient economy. In our debt-ridden revival, borrowing $1 trillion...

In the current economic climate, politicians and interest groups have encouraged the public to view businesses, especially corporations, as exploitative entities taking advantage of human suffering and even engineering the Great Recession. Thus, increased government intervention is necessary to “tame” the marketplace. Some consider the recent re-election of President Obama a vindication of this perspective. John Mackey, Co-CEO of Whole Foods, courageously shares an opposing view in his latest book, Conscious Capitalism, co-authored by Rajendra Sisodia. “We paint business for what it truly is: heroic,” said Mackey at a recent Cato event. “Business is the greatest value creator in the...

Accordingly, Sibley has released his Stuxnet-like Motion to Dismiss Indictment into the federal prison system. One of the most talked about components of gun control legislation is a magazine capacity limit. Proponents of gun control will often question why anyone needs more than X number of rounds (often 10) in their magazine. This is usually answered with a response about how it isn’t about what we “need” or with an analogy like “why does anyone need a car that goes faster than the speed limit.” Both of these answers are true but they leave a lot to be desired because there are practical reasons for why we actually do need magazines with larger capacities. Many...

A politically ambitious and rabidly anti-veteran local prosecutor in New York State is pressing Haddad for a plea, threatening him with 35 years in prison for the magazines. The last election has brought on essays bemoaning the conservative disconnect from popular culture and the need to somehow reconnect with it. The means of this reconnection are hardly ever stated, though there is the implication that conservatives would need to "evolve" on certain social issues in the hopes that its economic viewpoint will be taken seriously by a population whose social way of life doom it to be dependent on government support. Libertarianism represents the only non-coercive political/economic philosophy in the universe. All other such philosophies: democracy, republicanism, monarchy, dictatorship, socialism, and communism employ the brute force (violence) of government to enforce compliance of one group’s wishes on another group. Many Americans believe that libertarianism is an unworkable framework because without government to provide and enforce laws, society would be in chaos. As ugly an insult as being called a “Nazi” once was, in the mind of some Americans who think World War II was fought one hundred years ago, its overuse has caused the word to now connote a “busybody” or a “stickler for rules.” “Soup Nazi” makes this point. For anyone unfamiliar with the Southern Poverty Law Center, you would not gain much insight judging by their name. Rarely, if at all does anything they do relate to poverty, except maybe to bring some citizens closer to it. Granted, some of the work they do is for the good. The SPLC is a private organization with strong ties to the federal government, namely the FBI, the BATF and the DOJ. They primarily infiltrate, investigate and collect data on organizations that have been labeled as “Hate Groups.” Then, they turn this information over to federal authorities, providing the evidence to...

Common sense is both a noun and an adjective. As a noun, common sense—good judgment—is becoming a rare and precious commodity in our world today, especially from Washington politicians; thus, it describes little of what comes out of our nation’s capital. Yet, I have noticed that whoever it is that puts the words in the mouth of Barack Obama (or whatever his name is), has latched on to “common-sense” as an adjective to describe what can only be regarded as tyrannical, unconstitutional dictates that the communist cabal controlling our federal government is currently shoving in the faces of the American...

Just published on YouTube is a shocking video, that can be seen clicking on the link just below the post title, of discrimination against German and Christian children in German schools. They are severely bullied by Muslim kids in a school where immigrant children are an astonishing 96 percent. Hardly anybody speaks to them, they become introvert. They are outcasts, not integrated into the schools of their own land. The reporter investigating this shameful situation interviews a boy who tells her how he was chased and attacked for saying that he does not believe in God, and a girl who...

“In this era of mass incarceration, the police shouldn’t be trusted any more than any other witness, perhaps less so. That may sound harsh, but numerous law enforcement officials have put the matter more bluntly. . . . Police departments have been rewarded in recent years for the sheer numbers of stops, searches and arrests. In the war on drugs, federal grant programs like the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program have encouraged state and local law enforcement agencies to boost drug arrests in order to compete for millions of dollars in funding. Agencies receive cash rewards for arresting...

The most accurate crime statistics are on murders. When proponents of infringements on the Second Amendment talk about murders, they often claim that murders by strangers are only a small percentage of the total, often about one quarter. This statistic is misleading, because it implies that people that you are close to are the most likely to murder you. The largest category of victim to murderer is unknown. That is 44 percent of the murders reported to the FBI. The next largest category is acquaintance. It is 21 percent of murderers. The misleading part is that all people who...
