  • If Only We Were Swedenizing: Scandinavia Reforms While America Stagnates

In President Barack ObamaÂ’s Election Night and inaugural speeches, he made it clear there would be no centrist pivot in his second term. Forward, 51 percent of my fellow Americans, to a more egalitarian, tolerant, and communal future! The presidentÂ’s State of the Union speech on Tuesday will likely flesh out that vision as it applies to the federal budget, income inequality, and the environment. The era of Big and Getting Bigger Government is here to stay, heÂ’ll surely admit. Higher taxes on the rich and business will be presented as a small price to pay for an expanded safety...
  • Danes get a taste of American soldiering

FORT HUACHUCA — “You are definitely not members of the National Danish Shooting Team.” That’s what one of the EST 2000 range instructors said Monday afternoon, as members of the National Danish Performance Team were given a quick lesson on how to fire Army weapons. And there was no disagreement from the Danes, who had a good laugh at the comment. There were more misses — showing up as green dots — than hits, which were indicated by red spots. But it didn’t take long for some of the Danes to catch on to the intricacies of shooting. One even...
  • Minister: immigrant 'volumes' too high (Sweden)

Sweden's immigration minister has told a newspaper that Sweden needs to tighten rules for asylum seekers and other would-be immigrants to reduce the number of people coming into the country. "Today Sweden is one of the countries that receives the most immigrants in the EU. That's not sustainable," Tobias Billström told the Saturday edition of the Dagens Nyheter newspaper. The minister's Moderate Party, a conservative group and the largest member of Sweden's centre-right coalition government, has tasked Billström with looking at ways to lower the "volumes" of immigrants entering the Scandinavian country, he said. The party wants the country's immigration...

THIRTY YEARS AGO Margaret Thatcher turned Britain into the world’s leading centre of “thinking the unthinkable”. Today that distinction has passed to Sweden. The streets of Stockholm are awash with the blood of sacred cows. The think-tanks are brimful of new ideas. The erstwhile champion of the “third way” is now pursuing a far more interesting brand of politics. Sweden has reduced public spending as a proportion of GDP from 67% in 1993 to 49% today. It could soon have a smaller state than Britain. It has also cut the top marginal tax rate by 27 percentage points since 1983,...

  • Linguist Makes Sensational Claim: English Is a Scandinavian Language

"Have you considered how easy it is for us Norwegians to learn English?" asks Jan Terje Faarlund, professor of linguistics at the University of Oslo. "Obviously there are many English words that resemble ours. But there is something more: its fundamental structure is strikingly similar to Norwegian. We avoid many of the usual mistakes because the grammar is more or less the same. Faarlund and his colleague Joseph Emmonds, visiting professor from Palacký University in the Czech Republic, now believe they can prove that English is in reality a Scandinavian language, in other words it belongs to the Northern Germanic...

There’s no shortage of myths about the appearance of our notorious Viking ancestors. To find out more about these myths, ScienceNordic’s Danish partner site, videnskab.dk, asked its Facebook readers to list their favourite myths about what the Vikings looked like. We have picked out five myths from the resulting debate and asked researchers to help us confirm or bust these myths. Armed with this information, our graphic designer then took a shot at drawing some examples of our infamous forefathers, which you can see in our picture gallery...
  • Should the Free World develop in the Mexican or the Scandinavian direction?

The Mexican countryside is sunny, pleasant, full of stray dogs and in each corner of Russia, you'll find decaying houses containing a samovar. But today, a nation like Mexico or Russia probably wouldn't last two months in a full out military confrontation with tiny Sweden (9.5 inhabitants). But that isn't the real point here, although it is worth pointing out how pathetic nations like Mexico and Russia really are considering the fact they have an abundance of natural resources and border to two of the largest and most successful economies on Earth (USA and the EU). America is presently being...

Everyone knows the US today is the single most powerful nation on Earth and corners of Europe like Switzerland, Scandinavia and Luxemburg are the richest (yes, Qatar is pretty rich too). But what part, if any, will lead the World in say 200 years from now? Marxists claim the US is heading for a fall. Perhaps it is, but don't expect North Korea or Cuba to take its place. Hundreds of times, I've been telling members of this forum what is right about Scandinavia. We dare to stand up for freedom of speech, we dare to fight Islamofascism, we dare...

Summer 2000 (8.2) Scandinavian Ancestry Tracing Roots to Azerbaijan by Thor Heyerdahl Above: Thor Heyerdahl with Peruvian children who still construct traditional boats made of reeds, the principle material that enabled early migrations on trans-oceanic voyages. Courtesy: Thor Heyerdahl. Archeologist and historian Thor Heyerdahl, 85, has visited Azerbaijan on several occasions during the past two decades. Each time, he garners more evidence to prove his tantalizing theory - that Scandinavian ancestry can be traced to the region now known as Azerbaijan. Heyerdahl first began forming this hypothesis after visiting Gobustan, an ancient cave dwelling found 30 miles ...

Our offspring and culture is the most successful feature of the History of Mankind. Ancient Rome and Greece have nothing on Scandinavia of today, nor what we did some centuries after Rome came down. No, I'm not a Racist - and I furthermore am more than a true friend of Italy and Greece. But I do not believe there's a point in denying the fact that Viking Culture has played a major role in shaping the World of today. Have a look at it. Britain, North America, Scandinavia, Germany, etc. in one way or another, all were formed by the...

Deep down inside we all regret the fact that we have turned Christmas, originally a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, into a feast of consumption. Americans view themselves as being the worst example of this attitude and behavior. But are they? Perhaps there are nations even worse. Below, a report from an American ex-pat living in my home country, Sweden. The article; "Rampant holiday consumerism is hard to avoid, writes US-native and parent Rebecca Ahlfeldt, as she struggles to reconcile competing Swedish and American Christmas traditions in finding gifts for her children. Our family has entirely too much...

To begin with, congrats to the US on nice Black Friday shopping statistics! Maybe, the World economy is facing a brighter future despite Obama and the horrid mess of Southern Europe. Over here, in the midst of the Euro crises, it seems Northern Europe is doing pretty well. Especially Germany and my Sweden that is, if we are to believe the most recent statistics, delivered today on the 29th of November. BGA, the Federation of German Wholesale, Foreign Trade and Services, seated in the German capital of Berlin, today announced that it estimates German exports to grow by 12% in...

Walter Isaacsson has, recently, completed a great work on Steve Jobs. My relatives will probably force me to read it (even though Isaacson was the former head of CNN, they're Conservatives and I'm a 42 year old with a will of my own) but prefer his magnificent study of Einstein as far books go. Anyhow, what do people actually understand about how and in what ways the IT sector of the economy has transformed all of our lives? Being Swedish, I wish to draw attention to what a marvelous revolution a certain poor peasant boy from the region of Värmland...

Why are cities like Oslo, Copenhagen and Stockholm so expensive? Simple answer: - Why are you so poor? To a 20 year old office secretary who works there, Stockholm is not expensive. She can easily afford a 79 SEK sushi lunch and then do some shopping before it's back to work again. She owns a chic French car and a €200 000 apartment and her dad probably owns two homes and a nice leisure boat as well as a summer house in the magnificent archipelago of that Nordic city. There is nothing wrong with Scandinavian price levels.

Scandinavia is widely known for tolerance. Sweden's Freedom of the Press Act, passed in 1766, is the oldest in the World. Likewise, people dwelling in Sweden have enjoyed freedom of religion for centuries (however, native Swedish Lutheran citizens were not allowed to convert until 150 years ago). But what to do when certain religious miniorities don't respect the right of other religious groups to practise their religion? I am Swedish and don't hesitate to admit my Sweden has failed in this regard. Malmö is not completely overrun by Muslims like some people outside of Sweden, apparently, believe. But it's time...

But I somehow imagine you lot will survive my harsh accusations of driving around in Fred Flintstone vehicles and your tap water tasting like ***t. Let's forget about these "incidents", simply because I won't apologize and only Liberal Americans care about what we Europeans have to say about your great nation. Instead, I'd like to draw attention to a matter deserving much more of global interest when it comes to...

Ilmar Reepalu is the Mayor of Malmo, Sweden’s third largest city. He is a man on the move, trying to promote and develop Malmo’s position as a leader in green technology around the world. He can squeeze us in for an interview at 8:30 on a Sunday evening. Uncomplaining, he rides up to Malmo’s City Hall on his bicycle in the dark and rain to talk to us. We are in Malmo, not to discuss sustainability and fair trade in the city, but rather its massive immigration, which some call a problem, others consider a gift.
